What color should I paint this '71 Mustang? - Now with pics!

Post by Phil O'Keefe »

I'm trying to decide what color to paint my '71 compstang. It's apparently 100% original, except for the stripped finish. The neck is in great shape, so I will NOT be doing any refinishing on that, so a "matching headstock" is definitely out of the question.

I put up a poll over on HCEF, but feel free to answer over here instead if you'd like. :)

I got this from a fellow shortscale forumite a while back, and while it looks kind of cool as it sits, I sweat a lot in the summer, and I don't want to mess up the wood... so it looks like a refinish is in order. The question is - what color? The Duo Sonic is actually a solid "correct" SFG, even though the color looks "off" in that low light iPhone picture. I want something that won't look stupid when it's sitting next to the Duo Sonic. Also, I already have a Telecaster in Candy Apple Red, so if I go with that color for the Mustang, I'd have two guitars in that color. So far, even with close to 20 instruments, I've managed to avoid any color duplicates besides sunbursts and naturals / blonds.

I already have SFG and CAR lacquer onhand - any other color I decide to go with, I'd have to order from Bill at ReRanch... and if you want to suggest something other than what's in the poll, please mention it in your post - oh, and example pics would be appreciated / welcome too!

Thanks!

I love Fiesta Red, but I think it looks cool as it is.

I prefer Fiesta to Candy Apple so that gets my vote.
And broken record time..."do it Shell Pink" is my standard response.

Thanks Rob - I appreciate it. I've been looking forward to seeing the completed Bronco anyway, but seeing it sitting next to the Jag will definitely be helpful. 8)

Great. That will compliment the Duo really well, looking forward to seeing it finished.

Naah, other than the finish, I think I'm going to keep it stock and keep all the original '71 parts on it. :)

If this isn't staying as it is, I'm very happy that it's going to be Fiesta Red. Everything looks great in Fiesta Red.

I would have voted Sea Foam Green, but since you have a guitar in that color already I wouldn't do that.

Unless you plan to restore the Competition Red with the stripes, go Fiesta Red. My 1978 Musicmaster body is Fiesta Red and it's hot.

You could be really unique and do Fiesta Red with the Comp. stripes.

I may pay the ten bucks and try a set of those vinyl comp stripes from ebay, but I don't think I want to try tackling painting a set on there. I fear my modest painting skills are not quite up to that challenge.
