Check your bias for sure. I ordered a pair of JJs for my HotRod DeVille. They sounded OK, but a little harsh and missing some warmth. So I checked the bias and sure enough, it was set pretty low. Cranked it up a bit and they sparkled. Yes, they'll burn out faster, but tubes should last several years depending on how much you use your amp, so maybe shaving a few months off isn't a big deal if your tone is better.

Strange, i seem to remember the mesa boogie manual saying that they chose 6l6's over el34's because of their reliability. Is it possible to put el34s in a twin?

I don't think so. Boogie probably meant that when designing the amp, they chose to have 6L6 sockets in the circuit as opposed to EL34s. Besides, Randall Smith started off hot rodding Fenders so it would make sense for him to use something that he's totally at home with.

I'm pretty sure not. 6L6s are tetrodes and EL34s are pentodes. Although, it is possible to put 6L6s in place of 6V6s (with a bias adjustment), so who the hell knows.

Yeah, good call on them JJs...

Just got them, returbed the Twin, my ears are ringing with it on 3 again instead of the 6 I used to have to put it to. Sounds so much better.

Pens wrote:Okay, I need to retube my Twin I think. After a few shows where I completely cranked it, now it's breaking up at around 5 on the dial, and kind of cutting out a bit (just like how the Univox head did after a while).

So I'm shopping for sets of 4 6L6's.

It has Groove Tubes in it already. Based on what I'm seeing in my shopping:

Ruby Tubes are slightly cheaper, don't know if they are any good though, $60 for the quad
Groove Tubes are not terribly expensive, like $80 for the quad set
Sovtek tubes are $100 for the quad set, I heard they sonds cool, are they worth the expense?

Then there's JJ tubes and EH tubes, in the middle there. Are any of these any good? HALP TOO MANY CHOICES.
I had Ruby tubes in my Hot Rod Deville but didn't think too highly of them to be honest.

Thanks for that. I'm really glad I have the blessing of yourself. I feel so much better now. Is this how you make all of your friends?

Haha! Overposting? I am looking at forums relevant to my own problems etc? As you can probably tell, I'm looking for an Epiphone Casino and a VOX AC30, and hav been asking advice and researching these. Also, I have experience with Ruby tubes and didn't like them. Which I have put on here as an 'opinion' but well done for reading all of my posts!

You must be sooo glad you've wasted your time.

kingoftherodeo wrote:I have a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 2x12 combo for sale.

It's a 60 watt tube, has 2 twelve inch fender special design eminence speakers. Two 6L6 groove tubes and three 12AX7 preamp tubes.

Im based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire and pick up would be the only option I'm affraid.
If your (anyone) is interested in this amp, you would be more than welcome to try your guitar through it upon pick up.

I have footswitch, footswitch cable and dust cover with it. Also I have the original manual (has a few scribbles of my settings on the cover but I'm sure you could live with that)

£400? Any takers?

You have devalidated yourself.

Additionally I'm at work, wasting the man's time, thx.

Clearly I've already read the gold you deposited throughout this forum, and is that a gay joke? Those go well around here, top class.

Seriously, what is it with you? Couldn't you have just personal messaged me this if you have such a big problem? This forum is here to give anyone any sort of advice. My posts have been related to that fact. I was saying 'read my posts' so I didn't have to type that. Yes, I'm going to go on the classifieds forum after 50. Everyone does... Or is it the cool thing to wait till 60? Like I say, I'm new.

I'm not going to repeat the concerns that not only I have about someone racing to the Classifieds section, let's be gentlemen and continue this in the Pub where Reece and others are expressing their similar concern and stop threadjacking this tube discussion (which was solved by the original poster, Pens, in the beginning of April).
