I don't think of Superstrats to be metal guitar IMO. I have an Ibanez Roadster II I love it. Though it needs some love atm. I mean those pointy guitars BC Rich and the like, I've played a good few and loved the feel but just didn't see a lot of myself in those guitars. Aye, the trouble with BCR is they have some 'classic' models and a lot of outrageous models that overshadow them. See, one of the reasons I was always drawn to Burns guitars was because they had a sort of "hard" edge to them. The Bison in particular, which was the guitar that originally pulled me in, has some sharp horns, and the black version came with black hardware. It's a guitar that would look at home, in my opinion, in a metal or hard rock setting. In some way, I kind of wish my Nu-Sonic had been the all-black version so it looked metal as fuck.
I just don't see where or why all this pointy Ibanez stuff managed to stick around. I'm a snob, I guess, for thinking this, but if a 50 yr old guy comes out onstage with an Ibanez superstrat, even one of the more toned down examples, or a BC Rich or a Dean Dimebag Darrell signature and launched into Stormy Monday, it just doesn't look right at all. Chances are it will probably sound a bit wrong, too. It's the all-pervasive nature of the pointy EMG guitar that annoys me. Almost every guitarist you audition for a band is going to turn up with some atrocious dayglo orange chainsaw-sounding magic gay rainbow-shooting penis extension and it's just not on. Buy a proper fucking guitar. One that isn't designed solely for divebombs and an action of 0.00001mm to aid two-hand tapping that sucked you in because the pointy bits tugged at your massive inner child.
And PRS's are just the fucking worst. I would not have a PRS in any band of mine. Devilspawn that they are.
The problem is that musicians like to think that it's all about the music, whereas an audience takes in the whole experience. If you step out onstage carring what looks like a piece of wood stolen from a nice coffee table or a something stolen from a medieval armoury, they have expectations. Sure, it's nice to confound people at times, but it's probably better you do that within the context of the music you play, rather than trying to wring a heartfelt ballad from an active EMG-equipped aluminium-bodied pile of shit, thinking "OMGZZZ, I AM TOTALLY BLOWING PPLS MIIIINDS!"
