Replacing Tuners on early 90s Samick guitar

Post by S. Thompson »

So I have an early 90's Samick guitar (1992, I believe) - essentially a strat copy. It's actually not too shabby, but I want to replace the tuners and pick-ups on it. I'd like to buy some grovers since I have them on my dobro and they have an excellent reputation from what I know. My main problem is I have no clue what the measurements mean for, say, these as I'm not really knowledgeable about guitar hardware.

Any advice on the matter is good advice. Thanks in advance!

Ha ha... just noticed I posted a link to the 3x3. I assume I'd want inline for starters. My bad.

Welcome dude! Best bet is to look up the tuners you want on a guitar gear dealership or the manufacturers site. Any worth their salt will have the measurements of the bushings etc so you can take a ruler to your guitar and find the nearest fit. Its probably be hard to sy anything for sure unless another member here has had the same guitar and replaced the tuners!

Hopefully someone can come in with some tuner science

Yeah, I know very little about the guitar. I got it seven years ago... judging from the head-stock logo and a questionable serial number reference site, it seems to be from around '92.

It has served me well through the years though despite a lot of people turning their noses up at it. Ha ha! :)

I'm guessing it would be an eastern import so if you got metric tuners(not imperial like US ones) for a strat chances are they'd fit but you never know without trying!

Just wondering is it one of the valley arts ones? I love those things, I've owned two.

Not sure if this helps (doubtful that it does), but here's the shots I could find on my comp. I'll try to get a picture of the head-stock later.

Doesn't offer much insight, I know. Here's a picture of the logo on the head-stock. I figure that might give some insight into what era it's from.

Wow that looks almost identical to my first guitar...Don't have any original pictures of mine but here's the exact model and color on ebay

Valley arts model from 1995 I think... slightly different pickguard and maple fretboard.

Years later I found a sunburst one for $99.....got nicked out of my first car along with my cd deck. The blue one is now black, beat to shit, and in pieces around the house.

Nice! I'm pretty set on getting a set of Fender Hot Noiseless to replace the stock pick ups as well.

I really think that it has served me well over the years all things considered.

I have a hot noiseless bridge pickup in my bronco and I love it! I definitely recommend it. I haven't tried it for the other positions but I'm sure it sounds great too!
