Vintage danelectros are great quality and can be had for cheaper than the reissues.

Paid $250 for my 63ish dano.

Otis, I know you're ruling out Squire but just thought I'd offer my recent discovery.

After doing a lot of homework, I just bought a Duo-Sonic, the Squire Classic Vibe. Scale is 24 inch with a C-shaped neck. It's used but in mint condition and I paid $230 USD...new they are $329. I bet you could find a used one for way less than I paid.

Gotta be careful cuz quality is a bit uneven. After I played it and liked it, I had a tech check the intonation and it was spot-on.

I'm impressed with the neck as well as the distinct differences in sound across the 3-way selector. However, I'm thinking of rewiring so the middle position plays in series like the originals rather than the parallel wiring on these reissues ...easy upgrade to get a meaner  sound.
