thanks for the compliments guys, i really am smitten with it. a wee bit of nut fixin' and bridge intonatin' and it should play very nicely.

'MAZIN. Aged to perfection. One of the best looking CAR Jags I've seen. The only way it could look better to me would be the addition of a vintage tort guard. Congrats!

Makes me miss the burst 66 I sold for my Maverick.

i thought about that before it arrived, because i thought the white guard was a replacement. upon closer inspection i'm pretty sure it's original though. dunno how i'd feel about a tort guard on faded CAR, it might make me sick in my mouth a little bit.

I happen to have a CAR (Samick Jazzmaster knockoff) which I'm not wild about. Just recently I've been thinkin about a light spray of Fender Neck Amber over it...ironically I'd pictured something a bit like what you have there.

It's not quite as faded as your Jag, but I love the look of it on this Jazzy.

I was having kittens away on holiday that you'd receive a MIJ Jag routed under the pickguard for humbuckers. Could hardly sleep. Lovely, lovely Jag - beautiful. As for the mute, play a Jag with one on before you go through all the rigmarole of sourcing one: I jumped through hoops setting mine up on my old Jag just right, only to discover: they're a bit shite.

I've played hurb's mute enabled number and while yes, it's useless I think it adds something aesthetically. I think I'll get an avri one just to finish it off. I'm a sucker for bridge covers and the like. Task for the weekend is to fix the nut and come to a decision about the tuners.

Yeah, makes sense to me, Stewart. My old Mustang is all original but the bridge cover was lost who knows when in its history. I put a reissue bridge cover on it just cuz I like the aesthetics.

No damage to vintage value.

I'll echo the 'I don't normally like CAR but..' comments. I don't even really like the under the pickguard colour. The faded red, especially with the worn areas showing different colours, is beautiful. It's pretty much the perfect amount of wear.

crivvens, there's a lot of CAR h8ers in the world. to be honest, there are certain colours i associate with certain guitars in my head; for example, i think coronados look their sunday best with LPB but LPB jags look stooopid to me. but then again, if it'd been an LPB and i'd got it for this price, i'd be happy enough that i'd be willing to get used to it.

anyway, here's a question- if you look at the section of the back where the buckle rash is, there's a part where it's through to the bare wood. over that there's a transparent yellow coat. looking at the different strata of paint, around the edges and in the contours there's a white primer coat, a black layer, then the gold, then the red. there's no black anywhere in the buckle rash region. gavin suggested perhaps the guitar had been painted sunburst under the red, i know it's possible but not sure how likely it is. but it's strange the black paint is only in certain sections (around the edges, basically).

i'd just assumed the trans yellow stuff was a sealing stain but now i'm not sure.

There should be a gold or silver undercoat to provide the sparkle.

Beyond that maybe a sealer. I think Gavin is right - everything was generally painted SB and the fouled up paint jobs/not as nice grain examples were then rejected and resprayed solid colours.

LPB Jaguars stupid? You're insane, mind you I much prefer them without matching headstocks.

I know it's only been a couple of weeks but still. Maybe I need to reverse the stacking of the hardcases under the bed.

ah, you'll come back to it i'm sure. you're still in the honeymoon period with the mustang. and once you've seen what i left under the pickguard you'll never want to touch it again.
