Parallel To Series?

Post by Freddy V-C »

So I've been given a 2x15 cab for free, which is pretty awesome really. The only problem is that the guy has told me that I can run one speaker at 8 ohms or both speakers at 4 ohms each (each speaker has a seperate input on the cab) which I think means each speaker is rated 8 ohms (?), and my amp has one 16 ohm output and two 8 ohm ones. Obviously I can run it with only one speaker turned on and it'll still sound cool, but in order to run both speakers from the Tiny Terror I'll need to rewire it so the speakers are in series rather than parallel. Is this easy? And if so, how do I do it?

This article may help. If you are going to connect the speakers in series make sure they are in phase, i.e.
Spkr 1 +ve or red or left tag (say) to tip of jack
Spkr 1 -ve or black or right tag to Spkr 2 +ve or red or left tag (if same make/model)
Spkr 2 -ve or black or right tag to ring of jack.

If there's no polarity identified and the speakers are not identical things get a bit more tricky - you have to work out whether the cones move the same way on the two when you apply a voltage.

Very easy - just few solder points, I did it with my cab only the other way round, 16 to 4ohm.

Cheers for the help guys! Sorry I only just replied, I haven't been on ShortScale since I posted this thread. I'll give it a go, and if I fail, the bassist in my band's pretty handy at soldering so I might go cry to him for help.
