I think in most cases with the chips in the Rat, you will notice a noise/hiss difference between them. The LM308 is pretty noisy.

The only difference I noticed is that the new model sounded a bit brighter, however I like my distortion pedals to sound bright, other than that they appear to be very similar.

Thanks for doing the demo Doog.

Yeah, it's definitely slightly brighter, but you can get them sounding EXACTLY the same with a bit of careful Filter knob-dialing.

Glad y'all dug it!

I think the secret to using DS-1s is to keep the tone WAAAAAAAAAAAY down- I tried out (what I think was probably) a DS-1 clone a few days ago and sound pretty good like that.

Yh thats what I do, its just not a very inspiring sound. However at the end of the month my Eastman (guitar in avatar) will be paid off and I'll be able to think about my next purchase.

I do have my eye on a 8 string Agile though ((hide))

See they did sound pretty different to me. I don't think there's any argument you can't dial them in to sound the same, however. But you might struggle more with one than the other.

I prefered the LM308 version in your video.

I bought a RAT 2 first and then managed to get a good deal on the Turbo RAT. I then bought the '92 RAT you see in Doog's video. I remember plugging it in for the first time and thinking how much better it sounded than the RAT 2... I don't know, maybe I just didn't have the patience to try and dial in a half decent sound. I was gutted I couldn't really justify keeping the old RAT... I thought it sounded amazing :(

I stumbled upon a killer deal from this place - http://www.oxfordguitargallery.com/ - last week, A brand new ProCo You Dirty Rat for £40! Being a fan of the Rat and Turbo Rat a thought i'd give it a go. If you follow the link to their sale on the front page you can see what other bargains they have in stock.

I thought I should report back on my findings after I did the Ruetz mod.

I really like it. Much less gain than without the mod but enough for my purposes. Nice bottom end which I like. I was using my Ampeg Scrambler clone to boost it too and I could get awesome tones out of it. Overall quite impressed.

So I ended up putting a LM308N in my Turbo Rat as I was intrigued by what kind of difference in sound it would make. I don't know if it is that fact that I played it through my Klon clone (set as clean boost with gain on zero) but the mod seems to have made a big difference. It seems to now have a bigger, fuller sound with a fair bit less treble and less harsh sounding overall. A bit more treble would be good, but that can be sorted using my amp controls anyway. I like it!
