fender hot rod deluxe problem

Post by sp3k »

So my fender hot rod has been doing some "popcorn pop" noises! When it started it was just when i turned it one, just for 2 or 3 min i sometimes would hear some "pop" noises, now it's doing it a lot more especially when its a bit louder. So, do i need to change the tube? power, pre or both? or i just should take it to someone to who knows what his doing to take a look at it? my main concern here it that i end up taking it to some guy that will charge me a fortune for something simple, like they to with guitar setups....

does it crackle when you turn any of the knobs?

my amp had the same popping problem, i let it go until til it was popping so bad that it would pop, then try and change channels, and get stuck.

the amp gets so hot that it melted a couple solder joints on the inside that needed touching up. after we did that it was good as new. no new tubes needed

My Deville had the same issue as robroe's amp, it was the solder joints that needing fixing up since the solders went bad. I would get that checked out before getting new tubes.

With the amp on, at normal volume and with the reverb off, tap the top of the cabinet with your fingers.
if you can hear a sound transmitted trough your speaker, as though you had tapped a microphone, you probably have a bad preamp tube.

To find out which one it is, (assuming there's only one) tap them gently, one by one. You're more than likely going to hear the tap trough the speaker with all of them to a degree. The bad tube will be louder and will probably make some of that popcorn noise as well.

Change that motherfucker.

my test is act like you are flicking someones ear with your finger but flick each one of the knobs.

if you flick one and your amp goes into a seizure, its the soldering

It turns out it was a bad valve. Thanks for the help :)
