hmmm i wonder whats wrong with mine then. i'm guessing a duff contact if i can touch it and it comes back.

No, you probably have the shit optocoupler issue as well. Replace that shit per hotrod's docs.

Having thought about it I might give one of the EHX 22/44 Calibre's a go as they're small and can be used with any of my existing cabs. Anyone have any experience with them?
