Advice on Vocal Mics?

We're needing another vocal mic for rehearsing (primarily just in a garage, for what it matters).

I'm presuming we probably won't need it for live shows, since most places will have their own, but what would you folks recommend? I'd not want to spend over Â£50.

Should I just go for a used Shure SM58? Is there anything of a similar quality for less.

Sounds like you'd do fine with a really trashy mic. Anything, really.

Still, I'd advocate getting a used SM58. Play with it live, track with it at home/the studio, keep it for when you need it. I love it immensely and it's rather forgiving. Later on when you have the cash, save your bones and get a Sennheiser MD421 for the same thing + fantastic snare drum and guitar amp tones. Thank me later.

AKG do some decent dynamic vocal mics for about Â£30-ish. SM58 clone type things!

Also worth mentioning that it would be better if it was a mic which doesn't require the singer to have their mouth right up against the mic (since it may be used for shared vocals).

For that, what's the best quality I can get for cheap. Is an SM58 still the best way?

Behringer do 59 clones. I got three for Â£60.

XM8500 I think they call them.

I would just go with an SM58. They really aren't that expensive, and it's something you'll have forever. When playing out, sound guys love to see 57s and 58s because those mics won't offend their delicate sensibilities.
