I'll show him that on Monday, but to be honest, everything I've shown him that does the same job but isn't a Les Paul I don't think he likes. I can understand that, if your mind's set on something you don't want anything else.

Another Epi Goldtop vote here. I got one for cheap last year and it's a very great guitar. I'd also support whoever suggested stepping up into uh..."real" Gibson territory tho: I picked up a very very clean 2005 Les Paul Junior (sunburst gloss finish etc) for £350 recently - it's a very very very great guitar, equipped with a P90 that could probably take the paint off yr garage door at fifty paces.
OK, I exaggerate, but it's a little rock monster, and surprisingly flexible using the T and V knobs. Well worth looking out for one of those, maybe.

He told me today that he has ordered one of the new Tokai Les Pauls. He showed me pics and it looks nice. I suppose he got a bit itchy and heard that these were good. It's a set-neck and everything, so it should be good. £250.

He also went today to look at a Line 6 Spider IV, either 30w or 50w, I can't remember. I think there was £109 on it.

I'd whole heartedly recommend an Agile if the OP wasn't in Ireland, as shipping would make it cost preventative. Their quality is right up there with the higher end Epiphone lines, for quite a bit less.

I was skeptical too when I first read about them. Countless positive reviews and their very supportive forum (AgileGuitarForum.com) pushed me over the edge into making a purchase. I can't say I was the least bit disappointed with my decision either.
