Fender MIJ MUSTANG, LTD LP-clone bass, CV duo, Jagmaster.

I`m thinking bronco knobs and a white pearl pickguard on the mustang.

It was called Competition Burgundy before it became Competition Blue... see this original Fender color chart - http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_GcxVTFWRwww/S0ntHaYf8xI/AAAAAAAAALQ/b5FEZ8NdCVc/s400/colors.JPG In all my research on Fender paints, I have not found evidence that LPB is the same color that is the base for Competition Burgundy/Blue. It appears different to my eye too. Thanks for the love guys =)

I agree the old color chart thing, but idk if it was a typo truly? Up until 1971, the Competition Burgundy/Blue ones I've seen have all had purpled edges. (Sometimes mis-labeled as a "Purpleburst" paint) 70 & 71 was less & less of the purpling, it was really inconsistent, so you'll see some with a great deal of purple, and then some with hardly any. LPB was not a Competition Mustang color to my knowledge. It was always "Competition Blue"... if you find any solid info linking LPB as the base paint for the vintage Competition Burgundy/Blue, I'll love to check it out. A rose by any other name is still a rose, no?

@Mages - yes, it is indeed that crazy unicorn - a true 1969 vintage lefty Mustang Bass. It still blows my mind that after searching almost a year it was only 10 minutes from where I live! All stored away since 1974! Nuts!

@NickS - Yeah, that's me there. We played an after-party for the Providence International Film Fest premiere of "Sleather" - a film that my boyfriend did the original score for - [url]www.sleathermovie.com[url], just a month after I had the bass & was learning to play seriously! So there we were doing songs from the film, all original except our cover of David Bowie/John Lennon's "Fame." I rocked a couple songs on bass, then vox & keys. BUT... regularly we play grunge, psychedelic and pop rock music. My bf's the mastermind. I'm an mc/lyricist by nature, just took to bass really well!

just noticed something odd about this chart.

Antigua didn't start on any fender until 1978 and all the comp colors were discontinued in 72-73

well then, I guess I have to agree that the early competition blue/burgundy could not be described as simply as LPB with a stripe. and I can see how one might be able to describe the purple edges as something at least vaguely resembling burgundy. although, I'm pretty sure competition red really is CAR with a stripe (there's no purple edges on those is there?

). from everything I've seen, they seem to wear in exactly the same manner showing the layer of gold beneath the transparent red.

@ robroe - http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/fender70p95.php Here's a link to that chart. Claims to be from 1970 Fender Guitar & Bass Catalog. The chart includes colors for other models besides the Mustang, and I do believe it's referencing the Coronado II, Coronado Bass II, and Coronado XII which came in Antigua in 1970 (actually from 1968-1972). That would be why antigua is included on there. You can see the XII here - http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/fender70p14.php

I have no clue about the CAR and Competition red being the same. Def lots of factors going on with paint - correct mixing, undercoats, nitro, aging, light exposure. It's neat to see how things can come out so differently. I've seen another lefty Comp Blue bass from the same year as mine that's almost a sherwood green color! I've also seen Comp Reds go bronze! Sweet!

Dropped a homemade decal on my Jag, my mate drew up the artwork from a poor screen grab...

I also have cool rails hidden under that cover now. Much nicer than the JB I had in there previously.

tbh, I just printed it out on printer-friendly sticker paper which smudges a bit... I just compiled a few layers of hairspray to keep it intact. I did learn something at art school !!!

It does have a 'been on the guitar for years' type look about it now which I kinda like. Sticker relicing LOL.

(L-R) 1975 Musicmaster completely restored to its Daphne Blue former glory.

Lightly reliced Fender Mandocaster clone with Seymour Duncan Antiquity. Matching Daphne Blue.

1978 Musicmaster (original body had been stripped and painted. I found a '78 black body and pickguard so now she's her old self again.)

Lightly reliced Surf Green '63 Musicmaster clone with mini-humbucker.

A thing I noticed is that I actually needed a JB TB-4 instead of the SH-4
to achieve better alignement for the coils...

new basment guitar factory shots

the 3 P90's in the last photo were sent to me to put in the Dotsmaster, but then other people sent me real jazzmaster pickups for it. it was agreed that these P90's would go into the next shortscale build.
