New Edible Cannibals; Phase Piece

Post by Bacchus »

myspace.com/ediblecannibals

There's another track up there. I had planned on doing one a day, but at least one a week will go up.

It's me fucking around with a Nintendo DS and guitars. It's not chiptune or 8-bit or anything. I don't think there what I'm doing is a genre or anything, but I'm sure Euan and Ends can land in and show me a stack of people who do this much better than I.

comp is just one track of DS-10 improv.

Steps uses CellsDS, which is a program written for DS. There's also the obvious guitar and bass tracks.

Ah.

I've just discovered NitroTracker, which isn't one I've used before. I might give that a crack over the weekend.

Usually, I use:

Korg DS-10
CellsDS
GlitchDS
Electroplankton

NEW STUFF: Shiva and Grumbly Wolf content for anyone who is interested

I'm starting work on a set of pieces for just guitar and bass that have come from me fucking around with phase. This is the first thing I have recorded, and it's just a phase piece, so if you know what that is and aren't interested in phase then there's not much here that will be interesting.

This is a one man phase piece, in that it's one guitar and a delay pedal. I continuously repeat a simple motif (six chromatically descending notes) and change the tempo from slow to pretty fast very gradually so that the motif phases against the repeats. This is an old minimalist trick, and not one I was really interested in before now. Best to listen to it without any distractions and listen out for melodies and sounds that aren't being played but are implied.

The plan is to have a set of maybe 12 pieces, with three or four phase pieces throughout. The other pieces will be fairly ornamented and texturally complex pieces based on psychoacoustic material derived from listening back to the phase. I'm interested in finding out what happens to the listener when presented with a set that will contrast minimalist, trance like phase pieces and complex, engaging pieces that are more active.

This is a Jag-stang neck pickup with the tone rolled off completely and the volume mostly off. I love the sound of the Grumbly Wolf going straight into the Shiva, it's like the mentalness of the Shiva but with the smooth liquidy gain on the Dist+ part of the Grumbly Wolf. Here, the notes sort of bloom out with very little or no attack. It's a really fun tone to play with because you can make it sounds nothing like a guitar, and more synthy or something. Even if you have no interest in the piece, I think this is worth listening to for the sound that these pedals can give. It's awesome. Then it's a Boss DD-3 and a Fender Champ 600 with a Behringer XM-8500 about four inches from the front of the amp.

There are one or two fluffed notes which maybe ruins it for the listener, so I may re-record it. I find playing this requires a lot of concentration and can be draining. Here it is anyway for anyone who is interested.

This is too long for myspace, so here it is for downloading from Mediafire as mp3 at 17.7MB.

As well as this phase set, I'm going to do an album that will be called A Machine for Killing Machines and will glitchier and more DS'ey.

Only if you have time. I fancied something that I can put on youtube as a screen instead of a video. Just black, with red bordering a la my myspace, with text in the middle saying what it is playing. It's probably something that is far below your creative abilities, but a complete lack of understand about what software to use means that I don't know how to do a decent job of it.

Ack, it's definitely not something that's worth feeling guilty about, don't worry.

It would be great to have something, though. Thanks!
