What do you think of this deal?

Post by westtexasred »

So,last week I ordered a Goldtop Les Paul Studio from Music123 and today they call me and says "sorry, we messed up. There was a glitch in our software that allowed people to place orders for more guitar than we can get". Frack! He asks what he can do to make up for it and I say not much, that was the only guitar I wanted to buy. Then he says "We do have another guitar you might like,it is $1249 but we will let you have it for $849. It comes with a hardshell case". I said I will think about it. He said"Ok but don't wait too long if you want one because we don't have that many of them.

What do you think? It is a Gibson USA(not the Custom Shop version). Worth $849? Oh wait,I have points so it will only cost $800

A Rock and Roll classic revisited.

The original entry-level goal of the Gibson Les Paul Junior guitar directed a simple design. The Les Paul Junior Special cutaway electric guitar reproduces the simple pleasures of that 55-year-old classic, while updating the format with a second pickup (in the neck position, a la the Les Paul Special), and improved hardware in the form of a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece combination.

The Gibson guitar's solid mahogany body is carved with a single cutaway for good upper-fret access, and was given a flat "slab" top for ease of manufacture. The neck on the Les Paul Jr Special cutaway guitar is constructed from solid mahogany carved to Gibson's popular "slim taper" profile, which offers a blend of speed and comfort. The neck shape on the Gibson Les Paul Junior guitar is an outstanding marriage between the rounded '50s profile and super-slim early '60s profile. An ebony fingerboard enhances the Gibson guitar's note attack and articulation.

Dual Gibson P-90 pickups give the Les Paul Junior Special guitar a snappy, slightly gritty response, with a chunky midrange, firm lows, and sweet, musical highs. In the bridge position, the P-90 packs plenty of snarly cutting power, while in the neck position it can be surprisingly rich and refined.

The Gibson Les Paul Junior comes with a LP Thinline Case

Don't do it - glorified faded series, and if your buying a Jr, it needs to have a stoptail bridge.

It's a good deal, but I'd save that money for a guitar you really want.

Another Goldtop was warrented because of the limited run and the resale value, but that guitar? I dunno, will probably go down in value and sound no better than the gold top you just got.

Not sure about this particular reissue. But the Les Paul Jr. Special with two P90s in TV Yellow is my Holy Grail. Originals are like priceless so I'd go for this with a hardshell case for $800. But that's just my particular lust.

A risk always is...you won't have played it so you may have to have it set up after it arrives. For the money, that would be a bit of a pissoff.

I'm not really sure....a quick search on ebay shows that people have been unsuccessful selling these at 900 start prices with no reserve, and about $1100 BIN. You'd be lucky to break even most likely on this, knowing how long you usually hold onto your guitars, this probably wouldn't be too smart of a move. Honestly knowing that you just did this to score a second example of a limited run guitar that's likely to sell for profit, I would just get your money back unless this is a guitar you've always wanted to have.

The salesman most likely gave you the offer for this particular guitar because they are A) trying to get rid of them through clearance soon anyway, and B) it's a les paul with the same type pickups and hardware, initially valued at a higher price than the goldtop studio so he probably figured you might bite if you were a recording/gigging musician. If you're still feeling GAS, then you can always just politely thank the salesman for the offer and tell him that you were only in the market for this particular les paul however there is another particular guitar you would be interested in that retails for the price of the LP JR....etc etc.. Or you could even ask if there's other guitars he could do....seriously these big box retailers always have a "secret" list of things to sell at clearance prices, and the public doesn't always know......You never know, there could be a certain color of A/V Jaguar or something that he'd do for $800

I like those guitars, but If you already have a les paul with p90's I don't see the point in it.

Ok nevermind this is the one you were referring too (Link)

Still,I wasn't buying to flip and it is different enough to warrant a purchase(Mahogany slab body and Ebony fretboard). $800 is a decent price for it I think. It is actually the only guitar in this price range that they could have tempted me with because it is on my "bucket list".

Isn't your bucket list also known as "The Encyclopedia of every guitar that has ever been made in the history of the world" ?
