Cheapish Gibson stlye guitar?

Post by Lucamo »

Do you guys know of any cheap, good humbucker guitars?
Not so much epiphone, the only epiphone I really want is a Dot, but that 399 is abit out of my range.

Vague thread I know I just like your suggestions.

you want a humbucker guitar or a gibson style humbucker guitar? There is a big difference.

As far as Les Paul style, check out Rondo Music. THey have some pretty reasonable gibby knockoffs. if you like Fender feel but wiht HB's maybe a jagmaster or squier tele custom.

Well, I suppose a Gibson humbucker, clone or epiphone or whatever.

I have a recent jagmaster (the china ones everyone hates) and I find its too bright, I guess that means I want a gibson sound.

Just found this used studio dot for dirt cheap, but that colour if fugs.

That's terrible advice. There are dozens of guitars that offer much better value for money than Gibson. Gibson make some good guitars, but almost none of them are good for the money they cost.

The main issue here is the type of guitar you want. There's a big difference in an SG and Les Paul. Mostly it's down to weight. If you don't mind the weight something like an Ibanez artist costs in the Epiphone price range and will knock the socks off those models. If you want a lighter guitar there are plenty of options still.

When it comes to buying a good humbucker guitar, your money is always better spent on something other than a Gibson. Once you get near the Gibson price range there are a ton of Japanese guitars that are better still.

I'll take it that I should look Matsumoku up?

And I agree with the fuck gibson. Only gibson I'd save up for is a ES335 or a LP Junier double cut away but those are like 20,000.

I think I'd prefer lighter, I basically want anything that has more sustain then my mustang. SUSTAIN FOR MILES

A Gibson copy with tons of Sustain ? An Epi Les Paul Black Beauty or G400 Custom . Both have 3 hot humbuckers and with al three on you have tons of sustain without the muddiness or darkness you'd expect . from multi humbucker guitars .

He asked for opinions and i decided to give mine. I'm currently living in the land of asian copy guitars and even the really nice ones don't have the feel of a genuine Gibson. Also consider the resale value, as a Gibson will fetch a far greater price than any copy on the used market. In some cases (as with many custom shop guitars) the resale value rises over the original purchase price.

I'm not just talking about modern stuff. The Yamaha SG range is fairly readily available and from what I've seen the quality will always beat the nearest Gibson in price. The Aria stuff is also worth a mention.

Interesting, right now im living in Hamamatsu which is the birthplace and headquarters of Yamaha but even in this city every guitarist seems to prefer american fenders and gibsons. Even manufacturers like ibanez which are popular internationally don't seem to be too popular in japan compared to the two american giants.

personally I think you need to ask yourself a few quetions...... First is it to bright cuz of the actually electronics or the type of wood? Electronics can be changed if you like the axe, go to a lower pot value or up the tone cap..... these are cheap mods, and if need be you can even go with a warmer darker humbuckers like the SD 59's, a PAF style pickup will really ad that round warm tone....

I would suggest going and playing some mohogany bodied guitars to see if that is what u are hearing, mohogany has that mid warmth and earthy sound while alder has more of a trebly cut....

Also definately look in the used market..... here in the States Craigslist is amazing....you can pick up Gibson's very cheap from time to time, I got a mint 2002 SG Special (NOT FADED) w/ hardshell for under $500.... but if you want new maybe a Schecter.... I know people who swear by them and I have never played a bad one....

just thought of something.....Check out Washburn.... I had a WI64 (les paul/ SG hybrid) that was a really nice guitar... I wish I still had it for a project axe..... Check out the Idol series and maybe try finding a WI64....New $350, used $225-250ish?? Its basically an SG with a thicker body, beautiful neck

This is a fine example of a good find.... I was searching Craigslist for a bridge pickup and searched for a guitar for grins.... Probably out of the price range but a great deal none the less...New was probably $1200 and then add the flight case..
