Are Fender Schaller locking tuners anything to have?

The guy at Guitar Village who sold me my Standard swears by them (as fitted on the Deluxe) - he says it's so much quicker to re-string if you break a string on stage. As I seldom break a string and I take a second guitar to rehearsal and gigs, that didn't worry me too much. I haven't found staying in tune a problem with the standard tuners but I guess it takes one factor out of the tuning equation to have locking ones.

but if you use floyd rose without locking tuners the guitar will not stay in tune!NickS wrote:The guy at Guitar Village who sold me my Standard swears by them (as fitted on the Deluxe) - he says it's so much quicker to re-string if you break a string on stage. I don't know what you're talking about now. That isn't a floyd rose, that's just a regular strat trem. Plenty of strats can and do stay in tune without locking tuners, but tuning stability is apparently increased by using locking tuners.
There's no point using locking tuners on a floyd rose-equipped guitar because they have a locking nut as well.

Sorry, but that's nonsense. I had an 80's Contemporary Telecaster that actually kept better tune when the locking nut was unlocked, and it was fitted with standard tuners. If a string is properly wrapped, and the nut adequately cut and lubricated, there's no reason why locking tuners are the magic solution.weeping_moon wrote:but if you use floyd rose without locking tuners the guitar will not stay in tune!NickS wrote:The guy at Guitar Village who sold me my Standard swears by them (as fitted on the Deluxe) - he says it's so much quicker to re-string if you break a string on stage. What he said. I have the six-point trem on the '73 Strat and the newer two-point one on the USA Std. The main thing is to make sure the string doesn't stick in the nut, whether you use locking or standard tuners.ekwatts wrote:I don't know what you're talking about now. [edit] What Doog said, to0.
Yeah, my very first ever guitar was a beaten up superstrat with a floyd bridge and no locking nut and I managed to keep it tune most of the time.Doog wrote:Sorry, but that's nonsense. I had the Fender locking tuners on a MIM Fat Strat I had and did not notice a real difference from the standard ones..... Like said earlier...... The nut being cut correctly is the main factor, if the strings are binding on the nut then the locking tuners will not matter as the strings hit the nut first

I've got Sperzals on my old strat and in terms of just using them to restring I like them very much. Tuning is very very good but as people say properly set up traditional ones can be just fine.
Depending on the guitar in question, as a preference I'd opt for the sperzals just because the only bit I don't enjoy about setting up a guitar is winding string. With normal tuners I tend to keep it to enough string for a couple of complete loops about the peg at most and this seems to give me plenty of stability with a well set up nut.
