Something inspired by a Cyclone II

Post by Jamesstarky »

This is my first project, something inspired by a Cyclone II, and Belinda's Mustang, and... well I've already got a Jag, so I wanted something with a full scale neck (sorry guys) but a short scale body. I also wanted the Jag Tremolo and Switchplate, but with three pick-ups.

Cyclone/Mustang bodies are difficult to find in the UK so I bought a Squire Bronco Bass in the hope that I could make something of it. (a guitar at least!)

And Something had to be done with such a ridiculous looking instrument!

I bought a Jazzmaster style neck, very cool and 70s looking with block&binding. There are issues with the neck pocket being slightly wider than the new neck but I can live with it. The tone and vol on the bass didn't have a control-plate so I decided to do without one and design a new shape for the scratch-plate. I had to make my own anyway because of the different scale. Here is the first mock up:

Here is the most recent mock up, the colour is a very pale green, with matching headstock. I haven't finished the scratchplate yet but its nearly there:

That mock up is lovely. But if we're being honest, I'm not a big fan of that color or the way the pickguard turned out. It seem smaller in the second one. If you can the thing to play well though, it would still be baller!

That's awesome! The pickguard does look a little off-putting to me though. It just looks like it should follow the curve on the control side of the guitar rather than turning back in toward the bridge where it does.

all it needs is a chrome control plate and the pickguard would look normal

I am digging the design. The Jag trem is a nice replacement for strat trem. You could also use a Mustang bridge too. Just make sure to place the pickup switch plate far enough away from the strings. Great original guitar.

Whoooa that's absolutely amazing and will have me eying Bronco Bass bodies for sure.

How do the body measurements compare to a real-deal Mustang's?

the body size of a bronco bass is dead on with a mustang guitar. the neck pocket is the only thing wrong, and it's just too big.

Goegeous! I would love to play an instrument like this. I really like the Cyclone II design, and this is an interesting take on it.
