Boost pedals - lets play a game.

Guess the boost ? because I don't know....

I would like it to boost my OCD without fattening the sound, and take it over the edge.

I would like it to work well clean in conjunction with compressor without crackly decay.

I would like it to push my amp a little when used alone.

I would like it to have a small foot print.

What pedal am I ? LPB1 ? Micro Amp ? ...

suggestions please. :D

Super Hard On? Maybe a Super Duper if you want more grit when going into your amp. You may even look into trebble boosters for kicking your OCD in the plums

LPB1 fattens the sound way to much for my tastes, and muddies it up a bit too, as a result of too much base. SHO seems the sparkliest, but its stupid expensive.

The Micro Amp is supposed to be one of the cleanest "transparent" boosts out there; certainly worth a look- the LB1 and SHO alter your tone too much to be as useful in each of the situations.

I'd agree with the consensus and say SHO if you don't mind that crisp bright edge while "taking it over the edge".


Along the lies of what Doog mentioned: I rarely toot the company horn online, but think you otherwise might be talking about the Moollon Signal Boost (recently described in a UK gear blogger's review). He says pretty much what we've been hearing a lot lately, almost the same thing that both Blues Saraceno and his fuzz-building dad said at Winter NAMM 2009 about the thing: "Simply more of what you already have, just louder", without doing anything to either to the original frequencies. Micro Amp indeed seems to be sooper clean as well.

I absolutely love my "95% SHO clone" Stompleague Mini Boost and Dwarfcraft Plane Ticket for pushing with both edge and girth, respectively, but the Moollie seriously gives ultra clean cleans. [/soapbox bark]

The MXR/Custom Audio Electronics Boost/Line Driver is an exceptionally transparent clean boost, I really rate it.

The LPB1 is a perfectly decent boost, and it's cheap, however it adds a bit off bottom end to your tone and isn't very transparent - but if that doesn't bother you then it should be fine.

I have clone at the moment that wasn't behaving well with my setup and that gives extra girth... something which I wasn't really after if I'm honest. It doesn't like my CS3 and gives off a crackling decay so I'm hoping this will work out for the better.

For the money I'm intrigued to try it out and see what happens. I can always dial the treble slightly on the OCD to compensate. :P

SHO works well for this purpose, but I've recently replaced my clone version with the (unfortunately named) Durham Sex Drive, which is even better.

Well it arrived and after I got home after fun on the underground it was a bit late to test it out properly.

But from what I call tell, no more crackly decay with compressor which was my main concern. :D

Have any of you use the Xotic EP booster?

I saw my favorite guitarist (Doug Martsch) using it live, and I'd be hard pressed to find a set up I like more than his (Blackface bassman, EHX vintage 16 second delay, deleuxe memory boy, etc.)

I'm seriously considering adding an MXR micro amp to my board.

I'm quite unfamiliar with boost pedals though. Would putting it at the end of my chain be a bad thing? I don't want to boost driving my effects into unwanted territory which is what I'm afraid will happen if I have it first.

Everyone I've seen with a boost puts it first in line though.

Suggestions?

A friend of mine has the Catalinbread super chili picoso. He likes it alot and I think its one of the better boosters I tried.

It's totally fine if that is what you want to do. When my LPB-1 was still on my board I had it at the end, because I didn't like how it changed my gain tone. You may just want to put it after your gain effects, and before delay (assuming you have delay), it all depends what you want to boost in volume, really. Microamp seems like a good option, though you could also just stick a volume pedal after your gain stage.

I've often put boosters at the end of my chain with no ill effects whatsoever. In fact I think I prefer it that way so that they don't drive my pedals, just make the sound that comes out of them louder.
