Low End Friendly/No 'wasp in a tin' leads - Fuzz

Been looking at Fuzz Pedals (again) that dont go to mush on the low end or splutter on lead breaks. I already have half a dozen that all have different flavors and i've also tried dozens. I seem to find one that works for rhythm but not lead, or vice versa.

The Zvex Mastotron appears to sound great on demo's as does the SD Tweak Fuzz, anyone any experience with these? Or any other suggestions plz?

Hey Fran, did you know the Mastotron is simply a woolly mammoth with variable output caps (for fattness) and input impedance adjustment (the pulse width knob) ? Heaps cheaper for a better pedal IMO.
The subs on the WM/Mastotron are unreal, never muddy but like zachary says, "they will knock beer bottles of your amp" or something to that effect...and they do!

Its a great pedal but the tone control sucks bad, its a very poor design and even using the BMP tone control in the WM is an improvement in my experience. Its better with the subs switch obviously but still, he (chuck zwicky and zach) should redesign the tone stack.

If you see on FSO I was the first to reverse engineer this one and provide the schematic free for all...maybe you or Mike could just make it as its a simple pedal.
Pretty good but it can pick up radio stations depending on your location.

They are 99% identical to each other...the Mastotron and WM. Both are very similar to the vox distortion booster of yesteryear....coincidence? I don't think so!

BTW, DK if my UL schem is still up at FSO, if not and anyone wants it just let me know. I know beavis redrew my schematic so that may still be there...

I can also say that in my expeirence of owning the Mastotron that I feel is sounds shit thru a completely clean amp, for it to sound the way I like I have to overdrive the amp a bit to add some "character" ......with the amp not overdriven a tiny bit it sounds synthetic and lifeless to me......with a touch of amp OD its a MONSTER!!!!!

Sounds about right, I always felt it was lacking slightly on my TRRI. Although the versions I made with different tone controls and various other parts sounded way better than the original IMO.


EDIT: Found it. (the warpig) LOL that's probably based on one of my modified sovtek schems anyways.LMAO. I had fuck knows how many variations online sometime agao and people where modding pedals using them left right and center.

Re: Boss FZ3. Tried it once. Didn't think much of it at all. Poor harmonics, no life to it. Like most Boss gain pedals, I thought it was inferior.

The 'phase' switch and attenuator dial might get you the bassier tones? (e.g. audio samples 1 and 3)

Nottingham maker Coopersonic has a new fuzz pedal out. Not heard it at all. Probably costs less than £100. I think Hotrox stock their stuff.

HUGE factor! I play through a totally clean 1970s Laney Valve Head. I noticed on some video demo's the guys amps are already crunching up before they engage the pedal, which is a bit misleading.

That is where i'm thinking of going. Ideally i could do with trying a few out i have'nt tried before. It seems clear i'm looking at Fuzz/Distortion crossovers, tried all the Big Muffs and tbh i got better results with the Dano Cool Cat Fuzz and Roger Mayer Spitfire although they lacked on sustain for lead.

My bassiest fuzzes have been/are:

• - Tonefactor Ultralord (like a controllable, silicon, bassy fuzz factory - have Mike make one)
  - Silicon Tonebender (you've played this)
  - timhulio Green Muff
  - Bazz Fuss (about three components and sounds ace - make one, you'l love it)

I'd Victor Kiam-style guarantee all four of these.

If you're after a high gain fuzz distortion, would either a Boss HM2 or RAT You Dirty Rat be any good?

Hotrox also stock both versions of the EHX Graphic Fuzz. Combined with a distortion pedal it might do what you're after? The G/Fuzz won't do the 'wasps in a tin' you want to avoid.

Plenty of tonal control with either the Boss HM2 or the Graphic Fuzz.

I had a You Dirty Rat which I bought for cheaps but thought it was rubbish, it sounded like a really bad Big Muff. I'm getting it modded to Monte Allums Rat specs as a love Rats and fancied having 2 in my set up for different gain levels.
