recmmend me a humbucker for my CVC Tele neck

while doing a couple of bits of adjustement to my CVC tele tonight I checked under the pick guard to see if their was a route for a humbucker like some had reported and luckily there was



So what should I consider putting in there?

Also, can anyone recommend me somewhere I might get a tele pick guard in the UK with a humbucker slot?

I'm also going to stick on some brass saddles and a 4 way switch. Would it be worth switching the caps or pots at the same time?

Pots are full size, keep those. I liked the Duncan 59 I had in my jag. I've considered a 4 way switch in my cvc as well but maybe a p90 in the neck.

Humbucker sized P90 in the neck..... doooooo it. Sound better than humbuckers (in tele's anyway) in my opinion.

thanks Doog, they look nice, especially being 3 ply and offering mint, but it says they are for 8 hole screw config. Mine has only 5 holes

I put a Bareknuckle Mississippi P90 in mine. It's the muts nuts... I'm sure others on here can vouch for how good they sound. They're a bit pricey but if you can afford it then go for it. Another alternative would be the Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P90.

at the moment i#m soliciting suggestions and then i will make the appropriate plans for what to buy. I considered the bare knuckles, if nothing more than they are from the south west and I always like to "shop local". What would I need to consider pickguard wise with a P90.

Bad news old thing - a full-sized P90 won't fit in a P90-sized rout. Luckily, there are a wealth of great humbucker-sized P90s out there: I've had both Dream 90s and Mean 90s (both GFS) in my guitars, but actually preferred my GFS Memphis Retrotron (Gretsch-style) in the neck of my old tele. Best good cheap pickups in the UK seem to be Toneriders - they do nice humbuckers and a HBP90 too.

thanks Tim, I know you are a bare knuckles fan, you got any experience of their humbucklers? I was looking at the toneriders for my old epi les paul and really liked them and might have another look at them as they seemed great value for money.

Thom's the Bareknuckles fan - I've just bought a P90 for the Gordon Smith, but it was only here long enough for me to bung it in a jiffybag with the tuners and send it up to Manchester. If it was me, I'd stick a Tonerider in there (the Alnico II, since you're asking...), then maybe try a Rebel90 (although I reckon you'll love the humbucker) then, and only then, spring for something more expensive if that doesn't float your boat.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of Irongear pickups?

I've been a bit of digging around and it seems that the pups in the CVs are unbranded Toneriders, some people are theorising that they are made in the same factory, very close on spec and look almost identical. Has anyone else heard this is the case?

What sort of sound are you after? I've tried quite a lot of them.
But I would second the Mississippi Queen suggestion - is a great pickup. Have one in my
LP neck position and love it.

i guess the sound I'm after is classic humbucker sounds not modern high gain. Think Keith Richards from the early 70s. Warm overdriven tones

I will check the mississippi queen and see what it sounds like.

As for price, at the moment I'm just wanting ideas, if I really like it then I will then think about the money afterwards.

If I were you I'd save your pennies for now and stick a Tonerider in there; let's you see what flavour of pickup you fancy, then if you really want to spend, you can spring for a Bareknuckle: I reckon you'll love the Alnico II Tonerider.

Thanks Tim, I'll more than likely give this a go then when I'm ready to do it. At least when I do want to spend a bit more then I can always sell on the tonerider

thats a good idea Bacchus, I'll send an email to see what he recommends. I have a feeling that I would have to get something for the bridge to match up better
