Nah, a low output humbucker matches a tele bridge pickup just lovely. A P90 might be a bit too hairy chested, mind.

thats a good idea Bacchus, I'll send an email to see what he recommends. I have a feeling that I would have to get something for the bridge to match up better
I was going to suggest this, Tim is really great at matching pickups to requirements - as well he should be.
I have done this every time I have oredered from them and he has been spot on each time.
But recommendation from me if you want a proper humbucker would be an Alnico II Stormy Monday or an Alnico IV Mule.

Same factory well possible, equal build quality too. But Toneriders get the more expensive parts.

Thom, I was considering the Mule as it's PAF based and seems to not be as trebly as the stormy monday on what I heard today, I will see what Tim comes back with from them.

Kyp, from what I've read Toneriders own the factory and do work for other manufactures "big and small" to quote them. At the moment I'm thinking of sticking just the humbucker Benecol mentions above for the time being. Then when I have the money and know what I want swap both pickups with some bareknuckles. I really like this tele and its a keeper for sometime so doing a few of these modifications (humbucker, 4 way switch & brass saddles) will just make it better in my mind.

Now what are peoples thoughts on the pickguard? The only ones I can find at the moment with a humbucker route has 8 holes and not the 5 I Have currently, should I just get one and put the extra holes in the guitar?

BKP came back with Riff Raff for the neck and Brown Sugar for the bridge. There is a shop here in Bristol that sells them and will fit for tree. Seems to be standard pricing as well.

Interesting, I would have thought the Riff Raff to be quite bright, but then again Tim is never wrong so would be interested to hear what you think if you go ahead.

A. Route the stock pickguard for a humbucker
B. Get an 8-hole pattern pickguard and cut off the screw heads and glue them in the extra holes, that way you aren't drilling extra holes in a sure to be classic guitar ;)

Thats what i thought but they said it works really well with a tele, It wasn't Tim though it was someone called Ben who responded. I will talk to the guy in Jam Guitars and see if I can find any sound clips

Haze, thanks for the tips, I have no tools for routing the pickguard so i really like the 2nd tip

Cheers Guys

If you've no tools to cut the guard, what will you use to cut the screw heads D:

Surely a cheap hacksaw and some sandpaper/files will do the job? Just be careful.

Turns out the B&Q webpage for tools is down. Fucking good'un, B&Q. What else am I going to go there for? Fucking chandeliers? I don't bloody think so.

Warmoth can make you a 5-hole tele guard with a humbucker route for $25. The strat guards I got from them fit both my 8-hole Squier Strat body and 11-hole MIM Fender body perfectly, and they did them and shipped them out very quickly.

edit- but I'm in the US. Shit.

Baccus, I think a guy at work has just ingerited some tools incuding a router so I will ask him if I can use it. I'm not confident with my DIY skills to be honest. I do have a hack saw though and might have a practice run before trying it.

Paul, I will take a look at he warmouth stuff and see what the costs would be but I'm guessing it would be prohibitive

Fitz, the place is Jam Guitars in Clifton. Really nice people as well. I've had them look at stuff for me previously and have a different selection of stuff in their shop as well.
