Agreed, close but no cigar...... It is nessecary to replace the Bridge HB in the Jazzmaster... I think the 2nd video proved thatendsjustifymeans wrote:Why do people keep calling the pup in the jazzy a p-90? It's not a god damned p-90.

"The Jazzmaster had unique wide, white "soapbar" pickups that were unlike any other single coil. Jazzmaster pickups are often confused with Gibson's P90 pickups although their construction is similar but not identical. The coil is wound flat and wide, in contrast to Fender's usual tall and thin coils. This gives them a warmer tone without losing their single coil clarity."Mages wrote:it's clearly a P-90. have you gone blind? it's a big rectangle with six metal circle thingies on it. just like on them mosrite guitars.
Is a jm pickup closer to a p90 than a normal Fender single coil?...yes...Is it a p90?..no

I can't tell if you're being clever or not... but since there's no at the end...Mages wrote:it's clearly a P-90. have you gone blind? it's a big rectangle with six metal circle thingies on it. just like on them mosrite guitars.
A jazzmaster pickup and a p-90 share nothing but a vague resemblance as a large wide single coil pickup. They are COMPLETELY different pickups visually, audibly, and electronically.

Despite what they say these don't come with gig bags.
I've had a chance to play on them all apart from the Jazzmaster... I think if you liked the general vibe of the classic Players these will probably please you. The necks / frets feel quite similar to me. I found a couple with lazily cut nuts, the stings would make a pinging noise as bend the strings and often pop out of the groove. Quite a quick fix, and partly down to the badly wrapped string. Also a tone knob that seemed faulty... quite drastic tone change even by Fender standards. Still need to look into that.
The pickups are quite hot on the Jag and the sustain was very good. Interestingly I A-B'd the Blacktop Jag with the HH Classic Player Jag and felt the CP had the edge... Much more dynamic IMO.

I played the jazzy and fell in love with it immediately, though something was off with the wiring on the one I played. The single coil hum was really prominent in the middle position, like louder than it was when it was just set to the single coil. Weird, but I assume easily fixable.

sounds like they're wired out of phase. the out of phase switch position on a mustang has comparably loud hum like that.endsjustifymeans wrote:I played the jazzy and fell in love with it immediately, though something was off with the wiring on the one I played. That's what I suspected too, but outside of the loud hum it didn't have that signature nasally sound that out of phase pickups usually have. I didn't fuck about much in that setting so it's likely thats what it was.

Aren't all single coil pickups the same electronically? You have magnetic pole pieces, and a copper winding with N and S leads. COMPOSITION, mind you, completely different - magnet material, gauge of wire, amount of winds, etc are totally differentendsjustifymeans wrote:I can't tell if you're being clever or not... but since there's no at the end...Mages wrote:it's clearly a P-90. have you gone blind? it's a big rectangle with six metal circle thingies on it. just like on them mosrite guitars.

I believe Lace pickups work differently (hence "Lace sensors")Haze wrote:Aren't all single coil pickups the same electronically? yeah, they use lace instead of wirezedoktor wrote:I believe Lace pickups work differently (hence "Lace sensors")Haze wrote:Aren't all single coil pickups the same electronically? I saw a Lace video the other day that made it seem like some wild-ass difference they were reverse engineered from UFOs but Wikipedia says it's more or less the same crap just with some extra crap to make it sound like different crap? I've seen some demos on Youtube and they seem to sound good enough.Wikipedia Lace Sensor wrote:Lace Sensors are true single-coil pickups; however, internally they are different from classic single coils. The chief difference is that the coil is surrounded by metal barriers which blocks electro-magnetic interference such as power line hum. These barriers also help concentrate the magnetic field, allowing weaker magnets to be used, which results in less string pull. Less string pull, in turn, means truer pitch and intonation, and superior sustain.

The lace chrome dome in my 51 is one of the best sounding single coil necks I've ever heard. It's as warm and lush as a pickup could be.
