Yeah that sounds pretty sweet actually. I hadn't taken on board that you'd gone clean then BoR in the sample, I'm just not used to that Marhsall tone! Definitely one to consider then. I think I'll probably go down the BoR or OD3 route. OD3 being a cheap but perhaps not as decent option (also made cheaper by a Behringer clone).

I've currently got a TOD v1 and TS9 and neither really fits the bill.

(I think the mask of this thread has well and truly slipped to reveal a "help me find a new drive pedal" request underneath)

I have a cheap Tube Screamer clone and with the Gain set high and the Master set low and my Vox still at a clean volume I get a sound not too dissimilar (fuzzier, really).

Cheaper alternatives to Boss OD-3, and just as good I'd say, I would suggest, are:

Daphon E20OD Overdrive

and

Visual Sound Garagetone Drivetrain (Reverend Drivetrain II reissue).

oh......and for more Marshall-like tone: Danelectro Daddy-O. 3 tone knobs; cheap and easily available 2H in vg condition on ebay. Or get a Martshall Guvnor original (can usually be cheaper than a OD-3).

Boss OD-3 or maybe Super Overdrive would probably get you there, but really it's a clean tone. I think a lot of it has to do with a strong, clean attack when you're picking.

All, listen to Lloyd's playing on each track (neck pickup tone), there's a decent amount of break up going on, and with Verlaine's playing. It is definitely not clean, at least not by my definition.

I was just thinking, the drive side of my germanium big muff pi has a very good transparent low gain sound - when i'm at home tomorrow i'll give it a try and see if I can get the tones you're looking for.

Love Verlaine's Jazzy, even though that's tort this vid makes me badly want a Blacktop Jazzy with white bits stuck on.

In this live version of Marquee Moon he has a great looking Jazzy that's bang on with the Blacktops. It looks the tits. This is one of my favourite live videos on youtube, the tone and technique of his playing is amazing, to the extent that I forgive him for the chimney sweeper hat...
