CP and HH Jaguar necks vs CIJ

I'm in the market for a new guitar, looking more towards the jaguar. I have a jag master, Chinese 24in scale. I played an HH jag at guitar center and the amount of finish on the neck of the it made it feel like it was plastic, and cheap. It also felt cheaper to me, the neck, than the jag master neck. How does it compare to the CIJ? I haven't played one and don't think I will even be able to play one before purchasing one on eBay. And depending on my Christmas bonus, How do the CIJ, CP, and HH necks compare to the AVRI. And yes I know there are more differences between those 4 guitars that the neck, but the neck is what I am perplexed by.

Japanese guitars have glossy necks.

I hear the term that Fender necks feel "plasticy" all the time. I don't understand this at all. I guess when Gibson puts a gloss finish on the back of their necks you don't get that plastic feel because it is colored. I know you never mentioned that Gibson didn't but still . . .

The fact is, there was more time spent putting that clear gloss finish on the Jaguar neck than there was on your barely finished Jagmaster neck. It feels different, I'll grant you that but it shouldn't feel cheaper.


I love glossy necks. That is why I like Japanese Fenders over American. At least with teles. That said, I have never played an AVRI Jag or Jazzmaster

avri stuff isn't glossy like the jap stuff, and imo, they have about the same amount of finish as a MIM or squier strat neck. i've only played a few avri's, and tbh, they don't feel anything like the vintage ones. aen's avri was quite nice, though.

i love glossy necks, until i start to sweat.

they feel plastic because it's a plastic lacquer. if you think it's too much you could always sand it down a bit or give it a rub with a brillo pad.

Avri can feel similar and sticky but once it's been played in it should feel a bit different. Polyurethane neck will stay the same for a very looooong time.

+1. I have an AVRI Jag and Baja Tele with Nitro finish along with a Squier CV Duo Sonic. The nitro necks feel smooth and silky and not as slippery as the Duo Sonic. Compared to a Squier Jagmaster neck (new ones) it's not as dry as the satin Jagmaster neck. It's the sweet spot right in the middle. Pure joy to play.

Also don't forget about fretboard radius. AVRI and CIJ necks are 7.25" (includes the CIJ HH)where as the Mexican Jags are 9.5" (CP and Blacktop). Not a huge difference, but I love 7.25" radius myself. One of the things I like about the J. Mascis Jazzmaster I want to get, though it has a satin neck over nitro

I LOVE the J. Mascis neck...that satin finish is so luxurious. I also dig the huge frets.
Too bad the headstock is purple...or I'd buy one for my Blacktop JM.
