Blacktop JM mod questions.

Okay, after watching demo videos of both the Triple Shot and the P3, I'm pretty interested in both. The only part I'm confused at is knowing whether or not the pickups will be in or out of phase with each other. What does this mean and how is it determined?

I can recommend the Seymour Duncan Antiquity Humbuckers I have in one of my Jazzmasters. Stewart made a comment that it sounded lovely when we did the Shortscale gig in London.

Okay, trigger pulled on a P-Rails bridge HB!

Aren't there bridge or neck models for the Triple Shot? It seems that it's mostly designed with Les Pauls in mind...I SHOULD be buying the bridge model, yeah?

This is a TS-2B, which is for bridge, but I've seen it sold in a set with the TS-2N (the neck equivalent) geared towards Les Paul. Are the dimensions any different? Should I get this one specifically?

it depends on which one you're getting. i'm sure they're going to be angled, with the neck one a little more shallow than the bridge.

Final question, I promise!

I hit up the dude behind Pickguardian and he said a custom job would be $60 plus shipping. At this point, I'd be fine with buying a black standard Jazzmaster PG. Would that work? It seems the only difference between them and a Blacktop PG is the lack of switch holes on the latter. Also, it seems as though there's a difference (at least on eBay) between pickguards for vintage JMs and reissue ones.

Can anyone lay down some knowledge?

you can do it, but it's going to look whack. the rhythm circuit being empty wouldn't be that big of a deal, but the jazzmaster bridge cut out will be too big to mount your pickup ring, or the pickup itself, and you'll have to screw it into the wood. wiggity whack.

why do you need a new guard? you're putting dual humbuckers in it? that's your only choice, maynard.

Hmm. Really? I've ordered a Mastery bridge. That making anything different re: the bridge stuff you mentioned?

I just want a black pickguard, not mint green. Only I'm on the fence about spray painting it and not willing to pay the aforementioned fee to the Pickguardian guy. I also wish I had some way to order one directly from Fender, because the sunburst model of the Blacktop JM has a black one.

I also totally just realized that the standard Jazzmaster PG does not, in fact, have bridge pickup routing that will accomodate the Blacktop's routing for a bridge pickup. *sad trombone*

dude, buy a fucking blacktop pickguard from that guy who parts out fenders on ebay (but is a buttturd).

edit: i didn't find any, but i've seen them on there. i say use the other guard until the others become more frequent on ebay. or quit being a little bitch and get out the spray paint!!!!

I say return the Blacktop and buy the guitar you really want.... with all this money and time ur putting in it you can prolly have a guitar you would really like off the bat

It sounds like you would be happier with this.

It would nail the tones ur after better and the pick guard is not mint......

I figure with all ur talkin bout you will have about $725ish wrapped up in ur BT JM......thats mighty close to a new Black Classic Player....... not to even mention the used market...

Well, it just arrived here and I'm already stoked on it despite a weak-looking bridge.

As for the moneys, please know that almost the entire cost of the aftermarket parts was covered by a birthday cash injection by my folks...I had no idea, I bought the guitar online a few hours before. Just sayin'.

check out that other guys thread where he tears his down (for whatever reason). looks like the humbucker hole in the bridge is about the same size as a regular jazzmaster hole, so you may getaway with using a real jazzm pg.

I'm tearing it down because the electronics have been mucked with.
Trying to atone for the previous owner's sins.

Bummed to hear that, but may I request confirmation/denial re: the possibility of using a regular Jazzmaster PG on my Blacktop? I will be adding a P-Rails humbucker, though...

Sorry, I can't say for certain. I don't have a spare JM pickguard around to compare. I used to, but can't seem to find it...must have sold it.

The JM pickups are a bit longer than the humbucker/ring...so you'd have a gap above and below the pickup as well as the semi-circle gaps for where the JM pickup mounting screws go into the cover. The humbucker and ring are wider than the JM pickup, so you'd have to make it wider.

Safest bet is to just trace the guard and have a custom PG made.
