Epic "wtf is wrong with my Jag" thread.

Got the pickups wired back in and everything soldered up, with the pickup claws removed, and.. it still feeds back. Won't be able to tell if it's as bad as it was until I can get it plugged into a decent loud amp, but that's a bit of a bummer. Just need the pickguard (and to drill the bridge holes on that out as well) and then it's all done and dusted. I've left the pickup covers off for now, but I was considering getting some black strat covers. They'll fit, won't they?

Actually no, looking at the Duncan I doubt it. I'm not bothered either way, really. They'll probably look nice with the black guard without the covers.
I'm still getting the odd extraneous noise on the D and G strings. Might mess around with the action a bit to see if I can get rid of it. The neck is shimmed, too, so I might take that out to see if it helps. And fiddle with the truss rod as well.

I did play it through a tiny shitty little amp turned fairly low, so it might have been regular single-coil noise, thinking about it. I need to plug it in and rock out a bit to really see if it's feeding back or I was just sitting too close to my monitor. That quarter pounder is a fucking nice pickup, though. Proper impressive stuff.othomas2 wrote:I'm very surprised by this... it was like light & day with mine.ekwatts wrote:Got the pickups wired back in and everything soldered up, with the pickup claws removed, and.. it still feeds back.

Welp, I ordered the black pickguard from Guitarpartsresource last night so that should be with me in two weeks or so, and I also got some black witchhat knobs on there and I'm also waiting on a black trem arm tip and some new string trees. See, I was wondering if the problems with the D and G strings would be fixed with a buzz stop so I was holding the string down behind the bridge and comparing the sound, and the ringiness went away when I did it. Then I realised the D and G strings didn't have a string tree on the headstock, so I tried it there and it seemed to work just as well. Soooo I hope the extra string tree fixes the issue. I don't really mind the idea of a buzz stop, to be honest, but I'd rather get around the issues without one. Am excite. It's nearly complete.
What pickup would be a good match for the quarter pounder then? I desperately want to get rid of the stock neck pickup and stick something interesting in there.

The ringing sound is part of the Jags character. Buzzstops work though if it bothers you that much.
How about a SJAG-2 for the neck? The marginal mis-match in output wont be noticed as the neck position is usually stronger anyway.
Pleased its all worked out and this thread is a nice surprise, i never thought i'd see you owning a Jag talking about Claw issues never mind drilling one out for a TOM.

I can't believe it didn't turn out to be a massive disaster, actually. All I really need to do now is try and find a 15mm drill with reduced shank so I can drill the bridge holes on the pickguard out wider, which seems to be quite hard.Fran wrote:The ringing sound is part of the Jags character. You should be able to pick up a 15mm flat bit. If you secure the pickguard to a scrap piece of wood then drill it it should work out, as long as the point on the bit is in the centre of the existing hole.
Wickes stock 16mm which might work out better in case you go off centre a little.

Catswhisker Pickups do a p90 voiced Jag pup for neck and bridge...8.5 and 8k. Hand made, good service, and very reasonably priced. Don't know what the QP bridge output is though to compare.

YESSSS, got the drill bit AND the new pg this morning, so I drilled out the holes and slapped it on. Some of the holes didn't fully align, so I might try filling them with a cocktail stick and straightening it all out.
Things left to do: Stick black trem tip on, install second string tree. And add black felt washers to the strap buttons. Supercustom Jaguar power.

Not sure if I'm interpreting this right but if you're talking about the chimey ringiness on some strings I assume this is the sympathetic resonation of the strings behind the bridge when strings are plucked - this sound is something known with the trem type - so putting your fingers on them there will stop the chime.ekwatts wrote:the problems with the D and G strings would be fixed with a buzz stop so I was holding the string down behind the bridge and comparing the sound, and the ringiness went away when I did it. Pushing down on the strings behind the nut will make the strings along the neck and behind the bridge tighter and higher in resonant pitch. This will change the resonant frequency behind the bridge and the tightness there may lessen the volume of the resonance or mean that the resonance is no longer sympathetic with plucked open strings. This may mean that even with the string tree it will still produce the chime once back to normal pitch. Maybe.
Might be totally wrong if you mean a different chimey thingy though of course!

Or wrap a colourful Gypsy bandana around them and buy a beaded strap with tassles.GeorgeF wrote:If it's what Dave's describing, the ring behind the bridge can be stopped with a buzz stop.

Yeah, I figured the buzz stop might be the answer, so one's on the way.
I only paid £250 for this originally but I think it's ended up costing my an extra £200 in upgrades. I think there's a wiring issue to sort out still, but I'm gonna wait until the buzz stop and some new strings get here.
