EBay update:

I just won a vintage Musicmaster/Duo Sonic pickup for $42. I am not sure of the date yet. It's stamped on the last picture. I also bought 2 black mustang pickup covers because I need a black cover to go with the white pickguard. If I can find a neck we will be in business.

Nice score! Looks to be of the 80s possibly. Don't recall when they were discontinued but 90% of the ones I've seen have bee grey or black bobbins. Those look almost white on the top!

I have parts for your harness in route!

I have tried to snag a couple of 65 RI Mustang Tuners for my project but have been over bid on the last 2 auctions. Anyone had experience with the Chrome 70s F Tuners? wondering how they stacked up against the RI tuners.

The vintage f tuners I have tried have been crap. The reissue ones made by schaller are great quality and hold tune solid. I did have to drill out the tuner holes on my neck as the reissue bushings are wider but no big deal if you have a dremul or a press.

Does Schaeller make all the reissue F tuners for Fender? So the auction above are branded Fender but are made by Schaeller? I just am checking so I can buy the Fender brand if they are made by Schaeller or search for Schaeller F tuners. I am not really into vintage tuners unless they come with the neck.

I would go with the vintage ones or the mustang reissue if going for a cheaper option

I'm liking how this is coming together - ever since I played a '76 musicmaster in a guitar shop a few months ago, I've been pretty much obsessing over devising the cheapest method of putting one together. Good work & looking forward to finished pics / demo etc.

it may help your search if you spell Schaller right.

Well the Vintage Mustang pickup and the new black pickup covers came in today. I was leading on an Ebay auction for a nice vintage mustang neck but got sniped at the last second. went for $255. A little pricey for me right now. I topped out at about $200. I am still following up a couple of leads though. I plan on getting a F neck plate and Haze is providing the wiring harness and neck mounting screws.

Can I use strat mounting screws and springs for the Mustang pickup? I had screws for a humbucker but they didn't fit.

depends if the thread is right. Try until it works I suppose. Will wire up your stuff tonight, ship out friday/saturday. I think I'm going to solder the ground wire for you ahead of time. It has to be on the back of the volume pot so it takes a good iron and a lot of head applied quickly, probably best I just wire in a long lead and run it where the old one is.

Sounds Great. Thanks. I will keep hunting for a neck in the mean time and order the smaller parts I need.

Haze is amazing. I am super stoked about this. Once I get this wired up all I will need a neck and tuners :)

BREAKING NEWS FROM DALLAS, TX....

I just won a 1972 MusicMaster neck on eBay for $125!!! I am a little scared because no one bid on it, but it was listed as "Vintage 1972 Fender Music Master Guitar Neck" and no references to Mustangs or other compatible models so people searching for Mustang necks wouldn't have seen it. It looks a little rough but in a good way and the pics aren't the best. Best part is the previous tuners appear to have been F Tuners which is exactly what I was looking for. It has "J Torres" stamped on the heel. Assuming everything is legit, I may have scored a sweet deal on this one. Not the $50 neck deal Haze found, but pretty close. The timing and the price couldn't have been anymore perfect on this one.

Looks good except for the decal. I can assure you its a vintage neck, just not entirely sure, closer pics when it shows up will tell

The decal does kinda bother me, but these pics aren't the best. The flash could have picked up the decal more in the lousy light. The "J. Torres" stamp on the neck shows up a lot on 1970s Fenders. Not sure who J. Torres was though the internet banter has him anywhere from neck inspector, neck builder or even a master builder. The only issue is whether the decal is vintage along with rest of the neck. Someone could have replaced the original decal if it rubbed off.

Here is a 1972/73 Musicmaster I found pics online.

I saw that as well. Hopefull I can buff it off. My biggest concern is how much fretware it has.

Does it appear to have the original ferrules or the outline of where they were?

by ferrules you mean the tuner bushings? it appears they are there, but also appears that there's some dried mud in a couple of the holes...

actually, the whole headstock appears to have had mud on it at one point... that pic looking up the neck from the butt: that looks like dirt. (i spent my fair share coating hard, wooden things in the dust as a child)
