What makes you think it's a 71? My 67/68 looks exactly like that, only has brass/gold hardware and block inlays, slightly different/more flamed sunburst since it was a deluxe.

70s vikings (including 71's I've seen) are more like the type Zappa used...they have rounded F holes, Humbucking pickups, and 3+3 headstocks. Pretty sure yours is the same age as mine (prior to that they used decals on the headstocks instead of raised letters)

I paid $200 for mine and it needed $300 worth of work. I still paid nearly half what I would've on ebay.

$80 for a playable vintage viking is the steal of the century

not nearly as beautiful and flawless as yours is looking
but i liked the beat up aged feel

does need work though. binding on the top of neck has come off.
tone knob is missing other one is slightly broken.
but still function and work.

other than that i love it.

Heh, mine's missing a small section of neck binding too. I don't know anything about binding, and it hasn't really bothered me, but you could always take it to a shop with a good luthier and just see if there's anything he suggests, I can't imagine a short thin strip of plastic binding being glued to a neck would be very expensive.

Pretty good resource if you haven't seen that yet. You might be right about the year, since that website says 1971 was the last year with the fender style headstock. There's a "1971" on NYC craigslist right now that has the 3+3 headstock so I assumed that was correct....maybe 1971 was a transitional year.

Maybe Timhulio could shed some light on this, as the ss.org hagstrom guru....he owns two vikings himself, he might know more about it.

The Hagstrom.org.uk forum is a good place to go with a serial number and get an accurate date for your guitar. I actually only have the red Viking now as it has more sentimental attachment than the prestine condition black one had. I sold my most expensive guitars last year to put the money into savings for a flat, and the black Viking just never got played. Actually more of a wrench than selling the '69 Jaguar. I'm down to 5 hagstrom guitars now, and they're staying put

A luthier friend of mine is replacing the missing binding on the early Swede I picked-up on here, so I'll ask what he's using. Chances are it's the same as the Viking.
