The problem with the stagger is that they're all wrong on the upside down bridge pickup unless you get a custom set made with a left hand stagger for the bridge, which you can from manufacturers like Kinman.
Anyway, the pickups I've tried on a Mustang:
'69 RI: Terrible pickups. Replace right away.
'65 RI: They sound very good in my mind. However, they're prone to noise and as a result, I just don't find them acceptable.
Kinman aVN: If you want noiseless single coil sounding pickups, and you got the money, these take the cake in my mind. I had them in my '69 that I sold, and I miss the pickups. I noticed, though, that once in a while it produced a staticky noise. It might not have been the pickups, but it happened after a pickup change and has not happened with any of my other pickups.
DiMarzio Area: Similar to Kinmans at a fraction of the price. I didn't get to try them long, shame.
GFS Neovin: They sound quite good, but tend to take the Fender out of the guitar, IMO. That said, Neovins produce the single best out-of-phase Mustang sound I've ever had, so much that it became my favorite of the four sounds on the Mustang when I had the Neovins.
Lace Hot Gold: My current set. These are not humbuckers, these are legit low-noise single coils. And despite the name, they're actually pretty low output pickups. Lace pickups have a natural compressed feel to them. As such, they're not going to have that exact vintage response some people need. However, it produces very balanced and pure sounding guitar tone. At that, it exceeds every other pickup I've ever tried, even the Kinman. The Hot Golds are definitely snarlier than the Gold Sensors I had in a Tele and are a great improvement. Plus, they look quite stock in the guitar, and that's always nice. I've made my Jag into my distortion guitar, and the Mustang into my clean guitar, so the Hot Golds work perfectly there. It can push amps, though. Just not as well as other pickups.
Basically, to summarize. If I only had one guitar and I needed pickups on it, I'd spring for Kinmans, but no, I'd probably get the Dimarzio Areas these days. But if I have more than one guitar, I'd definitely want Hot Golds on one of them. I wouldn't want them on a second guitar, though. One is necessary and sufficient for me.

I had two Lace Sensors, a regular gold and a regular silver in my now sold Jaguar. They only sounded good when played loud or driving an amp. At low volumes they sounded flat and boring to me. I wouldn't buy them again seeing as they're only trying to approximate a single coil pickup without actually being a single coil pickup, for quite a lot of money.
