So I got the amp back from that old guy, he cleaned the pots and what not - but as I expected he did not solve the problem on account of not knowing what he's doing.

Anyways, I made a short little clip of the noise I am getting from this amp at low volumes. The noise is still audible at higher volumes too, absolutely wretched.
I guess my hope is that someone can make some kind of diagnosis after hearing this? Thanks.

I'd beg/steal/borrow another cab/speaker and briefly try it out to start the troubleshooting process. Sounds most like crappy tubes, but no point in spending money until you need to.

Worst case scenario is the new tubes don't fix the problem; you either attempt to get rid of the amp for what you paid plus the cost of tubes, have a tech look at it (giving you a functional amp to use your shiny new tubes with) or you just stick the tubes on Ebay as as-new.

Is that much hum normal with your other amps?
If the hum is really loud, you probably need new filter capacitors. They really do make a huge difference.



Also, you may want to swap around the preamp tubes, focusing on the one closest to your input jack. Try to see if that has any effect.


As DOOG said, try it with another speaker just to make sure you don't have a bad speaker situation.
