Give your kids cameras

Post by cur »

Since decent digital cameras have dropped in price and you can pick up clearance one for really good deals all the time there is no reason not to do this. When my kids were around 8 I started giving them my old digitals and then as gifts. So they have been messing with pictures for about 5 yrs now. They can also use my little pocket one whenever they want. So anyway, we throw their pics on the computer, we look at them. After a month I go back and throw away the junk without them knowing, but there are absolute jems in the mix all the time. You get cool pics of stuff you would never think of shooting and also lots of pic of people an places at cool angles and weird perspectives.

The reason for my rant is I took some pic off my camera of my project guitar and found this.

Thought it was cool. One of my middle school girls took it.

After he spent an entire weekend transfixed by my brother's boyfriend's iPhone camera, we bought my five year old son a camera for Xmas: ironically, entry level Fuji cameras are now cheaper than Fisher Price My First Cameras, so he's got some 12 megapixel thing. He takes such lush little pictures: sets up toys and things from round the house into little still lives, plus there are loads of pictures of people from his perspective (ie. very short). It's lovely. Hooray for digital photography.

This is exactly what I am talking about. It amazes me the things that they take pictures of and how cool they are.

Yeah, I've kinda procured the family camera and have been taking pictures lately. (I'm 17.) Digital photography is absolutely awesome, although I miss when everyone on MySpace had a photography album - Facebook isn't as art friendly of a medium by nature, but it's still really cool to see the armature photography on my feed.
