Pedal Order

Post by Mo Law-ka »

I've got the following:
flanger
big muff
chorus
delay

here's how i have it right now: guitar -> delay -> muff -> flanger -> amp.
I haven't been home to add the chorus to the line-up yet, but when I do, where should I put it?

I think you'd classically put it before the flanger and after your dirt, but it might sound suuuuuuuuuper lush having it chorus your flangeyswooshes by putting it last in your chain.

I'd agree with Doog on ideal theoretical placement of the chorus. I've currently got my Small Clone last in the chain before delay, but I used to love putting it before overdrive for a distorted chorusy sound rather than a chorusy distorted sound. (Also, ideally you'd want to place delay after dirt -- unless of course that's the sound you're going for.)

There really are no hard and fast rules, but as long as we're discussing ideal theoretical placement, I believe it goes a little something like this:

Compression -> OD/Dist -> Modulation (chorus/flange/tremolo) -> Delay

I'd say just spend a bit of time dicking around with the order and go with what feels right.

my set up is thus: guitar<chorus, hm-2, cool cat drive, flanger or tremolo (depending on the songs I'm going to be playing), delay> amp

I think I may do an demo using these m13 so I can easily switch orders. Maybe have a poll to guess which sounded better vs which was "correct"
