Two Faced Mustang - Finish Photo's Now

Post by Joey »

Before : 1980's Mustang

Image

I kept the finish on the back original. And decided to respray the front only... blending the front/rear finish along the sides.

Image

I filled in the all the holes with a filler. Filling the hole with a block of wood would of been an ordeal. Then trying to match front/rear finish would of been a pain in the ass.

After filling, I routed a new control cavity and cleaned up the bridge/neck pickup area. Tons of block sanding the filler and sealer to get it perfect.

I've been hitting it with a can of clear ReRanch all day. Should be done by tonight... then gotta wait it out for a couple weeks to start the wetsanding/buffing ordeal. I'll get a better picture tonight with it wearing some clear coat.

Looks fantastic especially considering the butchery you are fixing up. Are you going to sell it or build it back up?

Cool, thanks. Were these still made in the USA, or were they MIM?

It's in the classified for $100. If no one picks it up, it's going on ebay for $1 in a month, after I wetsand & buff it.

That's very tempting for $100. I am going to build a Mustang out of Ash, but it would be nice to have a real body there to work from and then eventually make a guitar from it. I like that it has contours which is what I wanted to do on mine as well.

What is the wood on this Mustang made from? Did you put the shielding plates back in?

Is the difference between 1965 Mustang and this one the contours/tummy cut and the slightly larger upper horn?

Finished the clear coat this afternoon... dumped a can of ReRanch clear on it. Typically 2 cans does a body, but since I'm only doing the front & sides... one can will do.

Total Expense $160

$50 body/shipped
$40 Parks Nitrocellulose Sanding Sealer - Gallon (enough to do 5 more guitars)
$20 Lacquer Thinner - Gallon (enough to do 5 more guitars)
$30 ReRanch Clear & Burst (all gone)
$20 Filler (surpisingly still have some left over)

Taylor, I'll post a pix of a 66 side by side with this one tomorrow. The most obvious difference in person is the upper horn, it curves inwards towards the neck heel.

That look great. I'm glad that you didn't attempt to replicate the burst (most amateur bursts I've seen didn't turn out well).

word. I'm glad I got to see someone make something out of that body.

I kind of wish I would have cleaned those routes up and made a new pickguard for it. Instead I put that weird brown body on it.

That or else you require being logged in to FB to see them... and not everyone wants to be signed up.

I made a template of a refinished "supposed" 66 Mustang, that I bought of ebay. Using that template I cut out this poplar body. How many different Mustang pickguards are there, at least 4? Wonder how many bodies there are...

I buffed half the back of the guitar, give ya before/after. Mostly cruddy cause of overspray and age... buffing really brought the original color back out. I'm gonna wetsand/buff next weekend, finish should be ready.
