Les Paul Junior progress- TV Yellow finishing

Post by paul_ »

I have put two coats of reranch TV on my DC Jr kit. It's not perfect but it's better than I imagined any finish of mine going, I would've bet on it having thumbprints and rice krispies all over it by now.

First coat, pretty bright even in the dark. A coat of satin sealer at this step would be Gibsons faded yellow as on '03 melody makers and cheaper run specials/jrs.

Second coat in bright sunshine: colour is getting there

The grain filling/subsequent cleaning/re-yellowing process is going to be interesting. I finally found pics of someone doing it. It looks messy.

does it come from here?
http://precisionguitarkits.com/

If so, what are your thoughts about the quality of the kit itself?

I'm starting to wonder why I even looked into this, honestly.

I want the SG JR kit soooooo terribly bad now.
Ugh, imagine?

That's a good deal, although the Juniors aren't at the same level of discount.

Actually it's from byoguitar.com and cost $189. The one they picture on the website is the actual one they sent me. It has a scarf-joint like an epiphone and came with all the parts, but they're cheap and I'll likely replace many of them later. It also requires further fretwork (leveling), but for the price I'm not complaining. It's been fun.
I've seen those precision kits on eBay and they look cool, am considering one.

Grain filling from the weekend, which I have to do again today because I'm an idiot.

Used Behelen solvent-based mahogany-colour grain filler, cut with a bit of reducer (1 part thinner to 4 parts filler). Goes on like thick acrylic brown paint.
► Show Spoiler
Then massage the beans out of guitar with all 8 fingers (thumbs not being period correct), which dries out the filler and removes some of it from the field of wood while it sits in the grain
► Show Spoiler

The filler's thinner is incompatible with the yellow coats so it is also used to clean the filler from the field of the wood (rub surfaces hard with reducer-soaked rag, wipe dry with different rag). Natural-looking parts are not rubbed-thru paint, but smears of filler.

If using quality spray equipment in climate-controlled situations, you can mist yellow over this to soften the grain while enhancing the yellow. If using aerosols outdoors, don't.

Every time I spray a gnat flies into my finish. Somebody needs to invent bug resistant spray paint.

I have another one of these kits arriving tomorrow. Also, rather than the Precsion kits I'm looking into the dc kit that Bulldog Bodies now have as I've wanted one of their '59 kits for a long time.

The first one is going to be a bit worn, due to a mistake and ham-fisted sanding of the front I pretty much closed the grain on most of the top which just got dirtied by the filler, rather than accented. I've also since learned of this reissue style tv finish that I've used a filler which is too dark brown, looking black under the clear now... so this first junior will be a bit more "chewed pencil" than it's younger brother. Back is still looking great, sides are a bit too yellow which is really contributing to a knackered look. Lesson learned.

I've given it roughly 4 coats of stewmac clear over the past few days, dodging intermittent light rains and heavy winds. Am hoping to start getting some wetter coats on it today after work.

Looks ancient. Very nice. The second photo before filler was also great looking.

Thanks man. I also like that pre-filler pic, I think using the proper filler should have it looking more like that when level.

Its almost done, all it needs is a jolly good buff & polish, and some fretwork. Junior #2 is getting its headstock cut today maybe, I'll post pics of that when I do it.
