JB JNR's in Jag

Post by kevlar »

Yo Shortscale,

I've had a CIJ Jag for a few years now, last year I installed a JB JNR in the bridge position so it could rock a little harder. I never noticed much difference in the tone of the guitar apart from there was no longer any horrible microphonic feedback (thank the lord).

The tone still sounds very spiky and and has absolutley no mid range punch, which is what I expected when upgrading to JB JNR's. I know that at the end of the day, it's a Jag, but are there any pickups out there that will give it more of a humbucking thump? Or should I have noticed a major difference in the guitars sound and i have perhaps wired it up wrong? :?

My current band plays with pretty high gains, and the jag just doesn't seem to be cutting it. When I got the Jag I was right into my jangly overdriven pop sound. I've even been playing my PRS Satriani SE more recently

It's partly to do with the 1meg pots in there which you could swap for a lower value for less shrillness. It's also largely to do with the bridge style which gives very little resonance or sustain compared to say, your PRS.

I don't think you'll see any more change by swapping pickups again.

I agree, change the pots to lower value. I have a JB Jr in the bridge of my Jag and you really need to lower the pot value to go with it.

Yeah I was looking into this, I should perhaps give it a go, it's a shame, as I really like the clean tone.

I've been looking at other guitars to suit my needs, but cash is tight at the moment.

 PRS Santana SE* woops, I have no idea why I wrote Satriani.

Will switching the pots out effectivley give me the effect of turning the tone knob down? I've never been keen on the tone control on the Jag, it seems to just muddy the signal when it's turned down.

not having mid-range punch and a JB pickup should NOT go together.....
JB has tons of mid-range....that is why they are not good clean

do 500k pots and a .033 Orange drop or Mallory tone cap.....

I have had JB in a strat and it deff would brings teh metalz... Right now I got the full size JB in my Jazzmaster with the above mentioned electronics and it can do the brutalz if I please..... The JB seemed to work for Cobain in jag/stangs..... and it brings the noise for Cantrell in a strat type guitar too

Wired up correctly ? The Jb jr was too mid-rangey for my liking when I had it in my jag.

No. I lowers the load on the pickup and just makes it not so harsh.
