Just came across this on GAK, no image yet though. Â£449.

"Details very scant on this brand new model! We know it will have humbuckers, chrome hardware and come in a Gibson gigbag- more as soon as we get it! Get yourselves in the queue by ordering now, we are getting very few of each finish."

I know a lot of people like the SG melody makers. This could be AWESOME.

This does sound very promising. Reasonable price for a Gibson too.

melody maker w/ HB does not feel right..... all melody makers have been single coils to the best of my knowledge.... but do want blue SG

OK. There is a series of them... LES PAUL MELODY MAKER (not the current one), SG MELODY MAKER, FLYING V MM and EXPLORER MELODY MAKER. I have no idea what to expect.

Of course they are. Gibson is Gibson. You need to spend some money in this ballpark to get quality brother, i dont remember ever trying a sub-Â£500 Gibson that was anything better than... okayish.
People will buy them though, its the decal and nostalgia trip innit.

Oh no, i know they are going to be poor quality. But I mean, I hope its actually a new model and they're not just using the melody maker name for a new 'budget' line or whatever.

If they actually made an SG melody maker with single coils for Â£450 it would be pretty cool, although obviously no where near the quality of what you would expect from a Gibson. Or what you used to expect anyway. Reading the product descriptions though sounds like they aren't like the old melody makers at all.

Ironically some of the older Epiphones are better than some newer Gibsons. That's just a neutral opinion based on playability and sound.

Wasn't the Melody Maker a budget instrument from the start?

It definitely sounds more like a bottom line level of instruments rather than a new line of melody makers. I expect it to ruin craigslist and ebay searches for "gibson melody maker" just like Fender did when they re-used the name Starcaster for their lower-than-squier level of strat knockoffs.

A 'student' model, like the Â£2,000+ vintage Les Paul Juniors. Of all people we should know about this, you can't beat an old Duo or Musicmaster. Because like Juniors and MM's they were made to the same standard minus the frills of leading models.
Taking into consideration what Dan has said; it is appalling to assume Gibson would use an old name that meant affordable quality to sell a range of substandard crap.

To be fair some Epiphone stuff is/was awesome. When the Korean production was in place they resembled Squier in terms of value for money but have since fallen drastically behind. Squier fucking rules at the moment.
