I've found Turbo Rats to be a lot darker than Rats, they're not just a Rat circuit with different bits - or at least I don't think they are. The You Dirty Rat on the other hand is very similar in design to the Rat, just a few different things inside to make it more fuzzy.endsjustifymeans wrote:I have limited experience with a turbo RAT but bright is barely the description I would use... more searing.cobascis wrote:The rat is one of the brightest distortion pedals you can buy?JJLipton wrote:Honestly i never liked the RAT either due to its lack of brightness. Right now im also looking for a pedal, The fulltone full drive 2 looks very cool.....2 stage overdrive? Very amp-like, if you ask me. Do you like tube screamers?

Sorry guys i forgot to mention...i had a robert keeley modded RAT II. It seemed very fuzzy to me...i'm a lead player and at times a shameless shredder. I find that fuzzy pedals in general dont work well for fast alternate picking/tapping..it just doesnt "track" fast enough with the pick...does that make any sense?endsjustifymeans wrote:it might have been a you dirty rat now that you mentioned it.johnnyseven wrote:I've found Turbo Rats to be a lot darker than Rats, they're pretty different pedals. I've got a Coopersonic Twin Tube overdrive and it is very amp-like.
You might also check out the Menatone pedals that are based on the pre-amps of well known amps.
I had a Top Boost in a Can which is supposed to sound like an AC30 and it was good. The Workingman's Blue is supposed to be like a JTM45. I don't think either would be a very good replacement for a Rat pedal, though.
