Pots, what works best.

Post by ekwatts »

I need a volume and a tone for a twin humbucker guitar. 500k for the volume and 250k for the tone? Which ones should they be, A or B? Logarithmic or that other one? Don't know what any of that means. Help me out.

Two 500k and a .022 capacitor for the tone would be the usual choice. Alpha pots are decent and you'll probably get a pair off ebay for £5.

I think A pots are favoured for both positions. There's a useful graph somewhere showing the curve of roll off but I can't find it.

I'd suggest a no load tone pot as well.

I use 500kB all around with .022 tone cap as Fran said... I would just do Alpha pots

250k for tone is prolly gonna be to dark for u..... especially if ur normally a single coil player

with the taper its all preference.... B/Linear is smoother roll off from 10-0 and A/Audio is more roll off from 10-5 and less after that....if that makes sense

I like the B's cuz it seems there is a drastic difference from 10-9 on the A's...too sensative... I tend to play/ switch/ and roll my fiddle like a brute

500kB (Linear) / 0.047μF (microfarads), or 47nF (Nanofarads). The two are the same value, just a different way of saying it.

most people wouldn't use .047nF for humbuckers, like mentioned above, they'd use .022nF. I prefer linear (B) pots. If you haven't tried them, why not try 'em now? If you don't like the linear you can always swap back for next to nothing.

The Jag-Stang came stock with a .047, god knows why. Its a dull sounding guitar as it is.

I can't hear the difference because I never plug them in. I always go with 500 and .47 for hummers just because I am lazy. It;s in Leviticus.

I like the combination of A500K pots with a 0.047 cap. Its always worked for me, for single coils I just drop the 500k down to 250.

I also normally use alpha pots as they're cheap and I was used to the taper but I've got more used to the response of CTS pots lately and they seem to be of a higher quality than the alphas anyway - which only last for a few months as I use the controls constantly.

I would personally recommend NOS bumble bee 0.033uf's - it's a the perfect middle ground between 0.022uf and 0.047uf that most people overlook.

I had to get them shipped over from America and it took nearly a month but it was worth it in retrospect. Expensive but you will notice a difference, trust me.
