I just did this, actually. I got an Ampeg Jet amp for $299, and there was an old SG-knockoff with Singlecoils (Global brand) on the wall for $125 that I happened to demo that was awesome. Total price with tax was $376. If not the used Global SG, I'd get a Squire classic vibe of some sort.
The spring reverb on the Ampeg is all the effects I need
