Modified Epiphone SG

Post by Narco Martenot »

Hello all,

It has been a while since I have posted a project here. I have been pretty busy working on a 1930s grand prix pedal car as of late, but I have managed to find time to work on a new guitar project. This project was not as involved as most of my others; is fairly tame, and only took a few weeks to complete.

This is my girlfriend's guitar -- she gave it to me to repair the input jack, which is all she thinks is being done. She has told me before that she dislikes the way it looks, so I decided to have a little fun with some inspiration from a Nazi aircraft's colour scheme. Her birthday is today, and I am going to surprise her with it.

It started life as a very normal black Epiphone SG (I forgot to take before photos, but who hasn't seen a black SG?) -- I have repainted it a flat-ish "chromium oxide green", and replaced the plastic pickguard with polished brass plates. The headstock is also covered in brass, and I painted a monogram on it that I designed. All of the screws and plastic parts were repainted dark grey. The strap is made of wool.

Hope you enjoy it.

Very very nice. But who has been chewing the one Tone knob??
Also have to admit read "wool" as wood and was thinking WTF for a few secs :?

Very cool. The split pickguard and matching headstock is a great look that I could see catching as a permanent feature on a new design (even on my 12 string SG!). love the colours too.

I think your misses will be chuffed.

Very nice. My only reservation is that I assume you have to take the tuners off to adjust the truss rod?

Looks great. Only improvement I can think of is of the inlays were somehow made to conform with the overall scheme, but that's nitpicking and it might look kind of silly if they did.

Sexiest SG I have ever seen. Love everything about it. especially the aluminum guard and the headstock. Cheers.

Thanks everyone!

The pickup rings actually hold the top of the pickguard down.

The broken knob -- I accidentally broke it while trying to take it off for the first time -- it was stuck on the pot. I decided that because there are already other dings on the guitar, that it seemed fitting. I also chipped the green paint off in a few areas where there were deep dings because I did not use any filler on the body before painting. They looked too unnatural with fresh green paint over them.

As for the truss rod, yes; the headstock cover has to come off. I thought it looked best that way. I would do it differently for someone else, but I'm guessing if this guitar ever needs an adjustment, I will be doing it.

Amazing work, as always. Great to see another one of your projects here, and definitely share the GP pics when that project is complete.
