AN DEMO! WEM Watkins Copicat 70's Solidstate Tape Echo Delay

Post by rps-10 »

First, apologies for length, first ever demo thing done by me and as it's off my HTC Desire phone so not exactly studio quality sound or picture.

A few here said "WTF is that" when I posted a pic of in tin the show us your gear thread.. so today I thought I'd get it out of the attic and switch it on and hope for the best.

This is pretty much it from the attic, I put a tape on and off we go.. takes a few minutes for the tape to clean up and produce cleanish sounds, (the pots are also scratchy, hence the rapid twiddling at times) so after the brief explanation of the controls you might want to skip a bit.
Also around the 7min mark you get the hear the never ending delay & Sci Fi sounds - couldn't go too mad with this as I had to keep the noise levels down.

But in all apart from poor sound and video it should give those who have never come across one of these beasties some idea of what it does apart from Hank Marvin impressions.

Great demo - thanks for that. The amount of car bot sales I've wandered round expecting to find one, but to no avail...

I've got a Mk1 (valve) version. Needs some attention, I believe, as last time I powered it up there was wax dripping out of the transformer.

nice demo, i used to use to have access to one of these back in the late 80s early 90s. So many were just got rid off. It would be fun to try and find one and have a play with them again

Thanks for the vote of confidence  first stab at this demo thing & with very rusty guitar playing.

There has been a few copycats on ebay recenently and they either never sell or go for very little money - even the valve jobbies.

Think my demo kind of proves, if you get chance to try one out before buying, don't play longer than 5 mins with it so you can knock down on price due to "distorted" tones on the delay - before the tape cleans up

Also depending on how you postition the knobs you can quite easliy get no effect at all.

Years ago I had a small valve driven Klempt Echolette given to me, wish I knew what I had with that and kept it

Ahh, one those thingys (copycat/echolette/etc.) that crop up on our local "craigslist" from time to time. I can try to check prices etc. if you want to.

Brill demo. I got all misty eyed there.
Had one in the early 90s. Sold it to one of my brothers druggie mates and he sprayed it metallic green with car aerosol, i could weep thinking back..
