Ben Gibbard playing a Antigua Coronado in new video
I love Death Cab. Guilty pleasure fo' sho. The lyrics on the first half of this song are awful. worst Death Cab lyrics I can remember . . . but that guitar is pretty sweet, eh? are there any other videos with well known musicians playing coronados or other weird Fenders?
anyways, this video was pretty cool and a clever way to market the video. They did one take and streamed it live when they did it

The guitar was awesome and the video was pretty cool. The song didn't really do anything for me though. I love Death Cab too but I seem to like them less and less with each album. The Photo Album and Transatlanticism were absolutely perfect. I loved most of Plans too, but I didn't really care for most of Narrow Stairs. I liked The Open Door EP that they released after it though. I'm pretty sure it was just alternates and outtakes from Narrow Stairs but I liked it so much more! The song "My Mirror Speaks" is infinitely better than anything on Narrow Stairs IMO.

Pretty much agree with this, when they're good they're very very good, but these days it's less frequent.James wrote:I think they probably have about 20 great songs, 6 or so of which are outstanding. The rest is very meh and this song is more meh than anything I've heard by them before.
There are some gems on Narrow Stairs though; Bixby, I Will Possess Your Heart & Grapevine Fires - among the tripe.
Saw the video and the Coronado... was waiting for someone to mention him using it!
Narrow Stairs is pretty naff but I think the middle 8 in 'Your New Twin Sized Bed' is one of the best parts of the album. Other than that I can take or leave it... Cath, Talking Bird, No Sunlight and Pity & Fear are some of the worst songs they've ever released. Up there with the cover of 'This Charming Man'
Lyrics are a bit rubbish for the new single but I think the tune makes up for it. Can't wait to see them in London....

i just listened to them yesterday for the first time as the bass player wants us to do "I will possess your heart", it's a good tune. some of the others I can take or leave tbh

see, now i like this song, but grapevine fires constant airplay has driven me fucking batty. i'll change to NPR if that shit comes on.
the kings of leon-esque riff did tire me after the 28th rendition. i'd love to figure out how to play that riff, but only while playing an antigua coronado.
i think ben gibbard may be the only dude who could pull off that guitar. he's so clammy and dead looking it just kind of works. anyone else i think would look like a wank (except Mezz).
the video was fucking ace though, really in depth shit going on as well as cool camera trickery. i love that they didn't do a continuous shot thing a la okgo.
i am a huge Elvis Presley fan, and one of my favorite movies featuring vintage fenders (when they were new) is Elvis's Speedway (1968).
this clip features a '67 Sunburst Coronado played by some random white guy for the Song Let Yourself Go (also note the P-Bass with chrome, the Seafoam (Surf?) Green Bass VI, and dope ass leather jackets/saxophone combo):

seen here about 0:53s, Elvis plays a sweet speedcountry lick (on the same Coronado, which he then proceeds to slap the shit out of), while seductively grinding his jank all up on Nancy Sinatra which i would totally DO, except not in front of those dancing children) (also note the Sherwood Green(?) Electric XII):

he also plays some sweet fenders in several other movies; there's a whole list here.
most notables (all these movies suck, otherwise i would've included vids too):
1967 Fender Wildwood VI from Clambake / Double Trouble (1967/1968):

50's Fender Telecaster with Bigsby from Girl Happy (1965):

1964 Burns Double Six (for ekwatts) from Spinout (1966):

Agree. Transatlanticism is my favorite by a mile. I also really love the Drive Well, Sleep Carefully DVD.Billy3000 wrote:The guitar was awesome and the video was pretty cool. It seems like they made a weird shift when Gibbard lost weight, started being handsome, and landed Zooey Deschanel. Those guys are all absolutely stellar musicians, though. Chris Walla is also an engineering and production wizard.
I've seen bits and pieces of the dvd and I really liked it too! Chris walla is a great producer, and I still respect them all as musicians, I just haven't liked their later stuff as much. I won't blame Zooey Deschanel though, I lover her, she is gorgeous!avj wrote:Agree. Transatlanticism is my favorite by a mile. Yep, he was far better when he wasn't trying to be fashionable or have silly haircut. Don't get me started on the bass player... He looks like a right prat when he makes his appearance in that video.Mike wrote:Gibbard ain't handsome - something is wrong with that haircut.
The only one who holds onto any dignity is the drummer. Who is amazing.
