Not to mention that there are all kinds of signature guitars that the Famous player never even played, but maybe helped design (then never used on stage even)... look at the Jag-Stang, the Schecter Ultra Cure, the Yamaha posted earlier in the thread, etc.

Signature guitars mean pretty much nothing but an excuse to charge more money. Influence, whether the person is known for that guitar... it doesn't actually matter.

Yeah. Actually, now that I think about it, they probably just went for him because his name rhymes with Jaguar, kind of like the JM JM, masics master(not end rhyme, but consonance and assonance at least). Well that and his relative fame.

Though really, I don't think they've tapped the Cobain well fully. Perhaps some market research found him out of style though, who knows.

Oh, John Frusciante, but his Jag isn't really unique. Brian Molko, but he's based in the UK and you probably have to be American to get a Fender sig.

Plus the Jag is a good guitar for Smiths sounds, even though he didn't use one. It was probably just the best Fender could do with the limited selection of famous guitarists that use/used Jaguars.

I agree with that...they put out the Cobain mustangs and Jags in Japan, but never released them in the US...seems odd to me that Fender didn't exploit that.

I agree completely with this, and it's the reason I had a "wtf" moment hearing he had a signature Jag before reading anything else on shortscale regarding the matter. I'm well aware of his influence, just not his influence on the Jaguar.

To get a signature model of a guitar I think you should be well-known for playing it, and perhaps be the catalyst behind a lot of other people buying them. Marr has never been associated with the Jaguar, it's just during his tenure with Modest Mouse (a pre-existing, already-popular band his short-lived collaboration with spawned a few WTFs itself) that he went all Jag-happy.

The notion that Marr would deserve a signature JAGUAR more than J Mascis deserves a signature Jazzmaster is ludicrous for this point alone. Whatever you think of Dinosaur Jr or however more popular/influential you reckon the Smiths are than them, this is about guitars and not bands. A band's popularity doesn't represent their guitarist's popularity in the guitar community. A Jazzmaster was Mascis's first guitar, he does entire shows on one with another two waiting in the wings. People have also been buying Jazzmasters because of the likes of Mascis for almost 2 decades (many of whom post here), if that doesn't qualify you for a sig model I honestly don't know what does. Most people who have a sig Fender have used the model enough to have influenced others buying it. I don't know anyone who's buying a Jaguar to play Johnny Marr's parts on the one or two Modest Mouse records he was on.

I totally agree with both of you. I think of Ric's or 335's with Marr, my point was more why would people question Marr's reputation or ability on gaining a signature guitar? It could be a signature Martin acoustic for all i care although it does make me happy to see Marr using a Jaguar.
If its based on loyalty to an instrument then BJ Armstrong can fuck right off with his LP Junior for starters, and Mick Thompson jumping ship from BCR to Ibanez... but its about more than that, is'nt it. Maybe Kevin Shields should have a sig Jaguar, he's used them the best part of 30 years and im sure it will help Fender shift a few units lol.

Like Shifty said, atleast Marr is a good choice concerning the Jags natural jangly sound. There are much worse candidates.

thats all I've seen Robert Smith play since he got it, and it's a shit looking guitar he should dich it and go back to the jazzmasters and telecasters.

Heh, interesting. I've seen a little footage of him using it, but not a lot. Mind you, I haven't been following them that closely in recent years, The Cure and 4:13 Dream were garbage albums

I love the Ultra III, but the Ultra Cure is kinda shyte

I can't believe it takes that long to put a 4-way switch on a Jaguar.
