Comparison of MG69 and MG65 stang pickups

Post by drBenway »

Honeyiscool was nice enough to give me his 65RI mustang pickups in change for a demo comparing them to the stock pickups in my MG69 compstang.

The same riff is being played with the 69 pickups and then with the 65 pickups, cycling through these settings:

Bridge pickup
Neck pickup
Both pickups in phase
Both pickups out of phase

The amp used is a Musicman hd130 through a Laney 4x12 v30 cab. I used a SM58 since I don't own a 57.

No effects were used.

Sorry for the playing, it's absolute shit... I tried my best to make a fair comparison of the two pickups.

If you don't recognize what song I'm attempting to play, theres a strong hint at the end of the demo.

Happy easter!

I haven't listened yet but it would have been better to use normalisation rather than compression as compression changes the dynamic range of the audio.

Didn't even cross my mind! I'll re-up it.

Thanks :)

Awesome comparison! Interestingly I thought the MG69 pickups sounded better than the '65 RI pickups. They seemed fuller and more balanced.

Based on this version of the demo it seems the 69 bridge + 65 neck would be awesome together.

Looking forward to version 2.0 of this one.

Yeah, people always give the 69 a hard time, but I loved mine and never thought the pickups were weak or poor sounding. I traded mine away but I really want it back.

After listening to these, I think the '65s jangle more. I like that.
