Squier Super-Sonic

Post by thatoneguy12986 »

I bought a black Super-Sonic off of ebay around 4 years ago as a project, but never really got around to it. The other day I was cleaning out my closet, and found my old SKB hardshell case. Inside was the Super-Sonic. When I bought it, I had no idea what they were, just thought it looked cool. Leave it to me to buy a rare guitar that replacement parts are no longer made for. The part I am missing is the control plate for the vol. nobs and output jack. I found a guy on ebay that makes replacement pickguards. He said he could make me one but I'd need to send him the plate to use as a template.

Does anyone know where I can find one?

Addam, I believe you are right. We have a template on the template thread. It's basically a Jaguar plate flipped upside down - lefty Jaguar plate. Oriented like a Mustang plate, but Jaguar sized.

Post some pics of the Super-sonic so we can see it. I plan to build a Super-Sonic soon. I love the stock ones except for the strat trems.

The paint is pretty much shot. The main goal right now is to get it up and playable. Eventually I'd like to repaint it. I've got a Dimarzio Virtual PAF going in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge, and I'll upgrade to 500k pots. I'm also going to swap the pickguard out for a triple ply B/W/B, and I'd like to have the control plate made out of the same.

You could use Stewmac's Swirl Remover and a foam rotary pad on it. It works wonders on guitars!

It's hard to tell in the photos thanks to my crappy camera. There's a lot of deep scratches and chips that go down to the wood. I don't know what the original owner did to this poor guitar but it's pretty beat up. Luckily, the neck is still in decent shape. The fretboard needs oiled badly and the frets need polished, but still in fairly good shape. I'm hoping to get it to a playable state in the next few weeks. Eventually, I'll have the body repainted.

I like the tiny flying saucer that's resting on the silver-sparkle super sonic. :P

That looks like it's gonna be a solid project.

Super Sonics are probably my favorite 'weird' guitar. The lower horn reminds me of an Iceman but classier and minus all the pointy bits. The strat bridge is kind of a deal breaker though.

Good luck finishing it, I'd go Olympic White if you ever get to that step.

Yeah, I definitely like weird guitars. Once I get to the point of repainting it, I'll either stick to black or go white. Just something simple. The body's weird enough that I don't think it needs anything special paint-wise. I'm not too fond of trems in general. I think they'd look killer with a TOM and stoptail, doubt I'd get that ambitious though. I'm anxious to get the missing parts in and get started on this. It's sat around as-is long enough.

I am pretty sure they are. Since the necks are flipped lefty necks, they must have used lefty guitar parts to make the Super-Sonic.
