Fuzz help.

I've recently had a craving for muff type fuzz. I've been looking at a Swollen Pickle (had one but it didn't like my Orange amp so I sold it, I now regret it), EQD Hoof or a Magnetic Effects Middle Muff (IC Muff with mids knob) and can't decide which to go for - any pros or cons for each would be good.

Recommendations of any other pedals worth looking at (Â£100 limit) would be welcome too, preferably with adjustable mids. I know some shortscalers are a bit short of cash at the moment so if anyone has anything that falls into this catagory for sale i'd be interested, even if you can't bro-deal.

I'd forget the Swollen Pickle (I know you loved yours, but you're the only person I've heard of who did) and go straight for the Hoof: got all the mids control you want, a blend of silicon and germanium sounds, and they look great. And their owners love them. A pedal that's permanently near the top of my want list.

I've heard really good things about them, the trick is finding a used one. There was a guy selling one on Offset but he seemed adamant that the only postage option with insurance cost a ridiculously high amount and I didn't really want to send without - particularly as I don't know the guy.

Just buy direct from Earthquaker - should just come on budget. Just noticed that Magnetic Effects is that cool cat that Tim knows; I like his stuff. Still reckon you should buy the Hoof, mind.

A quick look on Gumtree has revealed a Hoof for sale in Bournemouth, i'll email and ask if he'll post. He wants Â£100 though and the Magnetic Effects Middle Muff is Â£75 and he'll put it into a smaller enclosure for me.

FWIW, the IC Muff is not a typical Muff-style Fuzz - it's sort of it's own thing. I very much like it though.

I like them too but as usual I sold it on. By the way Mike, the bass player in my band is really liking the Green Muff with blend and mids knob you made me a while back. I would take it back off him but that would mean he'd be left with only a poo sounding distortion pedal. Maybe I should get him to buy it off me.

Rather than buy one for Â£100 second hand, just buy one new from EQD direct - be about Â£5 extra, Jamie's great to deal with, and mine dodged Customs when he sent it.

Good to hear it's getting some good use!

As for this situation, I second Tim's recommendation - Jamie is a great guy and makes spiffing pedals, better resale than yer man NoGraphicsMcCoy over there

I've been reading some good reviews of the Hoof so I think that's the way i'm going to go, thanks for the help chaps.

How long a go did you buy? I thought they'd got much tighter recently over customs charges.

get the EQD Hoof....... It is the only pedal I have that will never get sold, it actually cleans up with your volume knob and is clearer sounding than all muffs cuz it has LED's for the clipping, and it sounds unreal being boosted with a Salt Booster......

Also is has the best Mid control out of all the Muffs I have played with, buy it new and do not hesitate, they are kinda rare I think as I bought Mine about a yr ago new and mine is only like #539 or so

Plus it gives u the Dan Auerbach Tonez

EQD Hoof purchased, not from new though i'm afraid to say - my budget was Â£100 and that's what it cost, the risk of customs charges was something I couldn't afford unfortunately otherwise I would've.

Johnny, now you have the Hoof, what are your experiences with it and is it helping you in the mix like you said you were having issues on another thread? How does it sound with your JM? I only ask as the only demos I spotted with the shift feature are humbuckers. How different is it to the Green Muff that Mike makes?

I've only had the chance to use it briefly and so far i'm impressed. I put it on my board before my gig on friday and I think I used it a little bit, but i'm not entirely sure as we played pretty late and i'd had a few drinks before we went onstage. One thing I remember though is that it doesn't sound as high gain as muffs i've had before, and it sounds smoother - I found myself turning the fuzz control rightup which is something I would never have done with the other muffs i've had (IC Muff, Sovtek Black Russian Muff, Little Big Muff). I find it is less overpowering and I can see myself using it alot more often than I have found myself using muffs before, previously i've just used them for loud, heavy or noisy bits of songs but I can see this as being a good rhythm pedal.

My search for the perfect OD pedal is well documented on here and the Hoof makes me think that what i'm after isn't an OD at all but a fuzz with the fuzz control turned down. I have a few things for sale on ebay at the moment so will have some cash available so have been looking at the EQD Tone Reaper too as i'm quite impressed by the Hoof.

How the Hoof compares to an MBM Green Muff i'm not sure, i've not used mine for quite some time as my bass player has been using it - I could get it back and do a comparison if people are interested.

I can do that no probs, it'll have to be a written comparison as I have no means of recording visuals or sound. I'll see him at the weekend and ask if I can borrow it back for a bit.

My MBM Green Muff has some added features by the way, a blend knob to mix in a saltboosted signal, a mids knob and a switch that switches between something and something else - not sure what but one mode makes it sound bassier than the other.
