I always thought that he used a delay/tape echo for that sound.

it's waters' echorec/tape echo that creates that pulsing riff. i've tried it using my analog delay pedal and can get that same sound.

I thnk there are two elements being confused. The riff you hear at the intro is echo. Part way through there's a square-wave, on-off tremolo part.

this. i head they used the trem effect on an H/H amp to get that.

Hiwatt BOB I am with u. too bad i didn't have hiwatt amps or pedalboard. i know POD HD500 does a good job covering every pink floyd songs.
am a big fan of u2 too. due to delays
