i'd say the bridge is a bit higher (with accompanying shim) to acommodate the mute. if the mute isn't making contact just lower the bridge a bit, or just get rid of the mute and shim. personally i think they play better with the bridge slightly higher, but obviously you've got your own preferences in the offset field...

You must have a shimmed neck to have that bridge that high. I say keep it that way. It's probably fine. If you want to drop it you'd probably have to unshim the neck, which is also fine, too. Everything's fine.

Do basses count? Coz I got enough of those, but ever since I got here, I've been swapping out short scale guitars for longer scales.

i'll probably try to lower it and put a smaller shim in there. i just use med-thin guitar picks for shims on my JM's. thanks for the input bros.

I use the Fender nylon thin picks. It's a shame because then I'm always like, what happened to all my nylon picks?

I'm sure there's someone out there who's convinced that the brand of pick used as a shim changes tone.

I'd say so. If a guitar is a shorter scale than "usual" (ie: 25.5 or the Gibson 24.75) then it's a shortscale. I've always thought it basically involved anything that ties into the whole offset waist, 22-24" scale Fender-style guitar, whether it's a Japanese, German or Russian Jaguar copy or a genuine Fender. Those really short Rickenbackers could conceivably fit into it, too, but they're rather different.

I'd say the height of the bridge is probably a combination of the Mute and the previous owners preference.
You could try lowering it but if its just the aesthetic that is bothering you and it plays fine.. i would leave it.

If the action is a little high then bring it down. That'd kill 3 birds with one stone.

Better Action / Bridge height lowered / Operating mute

Otherwise... reduce the shim slightly, re-jiggle the 3 to suit.

Be aware if the bridge is lowered significantly you may still have problem with the mute not tilting properly. It may not be screwed down enough too, trial and error !!

The bridge doesn't look that high, mine is only slightly lower than that... a decent (business card thick) shim is one of the best things that can be done to jags IMO.
