The good thing about Epiphone is you can pick up some decent guitars cheap on the second hand market, like the MIK Les Paul Customs. Some of the low end stuff is atrocious though and i totally agree their QC is irregular.
I found some midrange models like the SG400 are reasonable guitars but need a pup upgrade to bring them up to gigging standard.

I've got a 335 and a Tele. Two completely different beasts. You can't get a Tele tone from a Gibson and vice versa... It's all just personal preference. I love both as much as the other. I paid what most people would consider to be a stupid amount of money for my 335, but I don't really care.
I agree that their prices when buying new are completely ridiculous. I would never have paid £2,500 for a new 335

I like Gibson's and Fenders....Although a SG feels/ sounds best to me out of any guitar I have played..... as Said the Gibson's neck is more frail but u get the TONEZ!!!!! and I feel they cost more cuz they are set neck.... and well alot of people don't like them cuz they cannot swap necks if they do not like them....
I personally will play any neck profile, I started on an acoustic and if I can play that I can play any electric, plus the thicker neck is where some of the TONEZ come from so whatevs..... thick set neck = Woman tonez
I think the hate comes from the
-fragile headstock/neck area
-some peeps hate humbuckers
-and price (any Gibson under $1k is bound to disappoint alittle)
and of course Snobbery.... Which I think Plagues any high-end brand

I knew someone was gonna say that. It's symmetric enough to trigger that part of my brain that somehow feel that PRSes are not cool. If I liked that shit, I'd have a septum piercing too. Symmetry schymmetry.benecol wrote:Except SGs aren't actually symmetrical.honeyiscool wrote:Now I hate SGs because I hate symmetric bodies.

You know, this might be wandering a bit off topic but.. Contrary to non-educated knowledge old BC Rich models are rated very highly as some of the best luthiery ever, they are also very expensive. A lot of the regular guys on the BCR forum own $3,000+ vintage USA models yet they will openly welcome the guy wearing a SLIPKNOT MOTHER FUCKER t-shirt with his $90 Bronze Series Warlock. I really like that, its fucking awesome in fact, we all start somewhere.SGJarrod wrote:and of course Snobbery.... Which I think Plagues any high-end brand
I've browsed Gibson places and you generally just dont see that, you see a hierarchy based on what they own. Its bullshit.
The official Gibson forum seemed sort of like that as well as stuffy when I've lurked on it. I've seen some of that on the Fender company forum, too, but not as much. The GearTalk forums (TDPRI/Gretsch/Epi/Strat) don't really seem like that, at least not to that degree.Fran wrote: I've browsed Gibson places and you generally just dont see that, you see a hierarchy based on what they own. I think part of the thing is that B.C. Rich designs appeal to the kid in all of us that love shit like dragons, Conan the Barbarian, Lord of the Rings, and just that kind of fantasy, axe-wielding stuff. I mean, I'm not sure I'd buy one of their guitars, but I see the stuff and it makes me smile, you know.Fran wrote:You know, this might be wandering a bit off topic but.. It just seems like Gibson designs are all about being grown up, sophisticated, mature, macho on top of all that, too. All about oooh, look at the flame on this one, the sustain, the sustain, etc. It seems so serious and the element of fun seems to be taken out of them. I see a bit of that on this forum in my limited time here, too (especially disdain for all things Kurt), but not too much.
I think Fender fans are guilty of that, too, but at least they're cheaper.

Definitely. This place is good to, if some kid comes with a CV Duo they get a welcome. Its how it should be, keep the bloodline going.plaidbeer wrote:The official Gibson forum seemed sort of like that as well as stuffy when I've lurked on it. It all comes down to who buys the guitars and frequents the forums....... I doubt u see to many lawyer types buying old B.C. Rich's..... ur gonna see them on forums like Gibson, Fender, G&L, and shit u never heard of like some of the expensive stuff PGS carries.... Fano, ect..... their Dicks in real life and think they are better than everyone so why would that change on the internet..?plaidbeer wrote:The official Gibson forum seemed sort of like that as well as stuffy when I've lurked on it. That is the general perception of the brand and understandably so. But originally they were Classic Rock guitars with exceptional build quality and less shocking. The classics are used by a lot of different musicians, session players, jazz, blues etc. You know yourself about neck thru construction and its qualities.honeyiscool wrote:I think part of the thing is that B.C. I used to hate Gibson because of their prices. These days i own two les pauls and would love another someday. My problem with gibson is that their guitars are pretty overpriced compared to other american brands. Also, their guitars usually need a few mods to fit me preferences, while my musicman jp6 needed no mods.
i'll show this off every chance i get:
